I just realized the 1991 Johnson I have should have the VRO fuel pump, but it doesn't and oil is required to be mixed with the gas. Is it common to replace this pump with a non VRO pump? I noticed on Ebay, there is a guy selling replacement VRO pumps w/out the VRO feature, which I can only imagine thats what happened to my engine.

Yes,
This tends to be a common thing for some people to do. So long as the VRO pump is in good working order there is no reson to get rid of the oiling feature. For smaller boats mixing is to much of an issue however, I can not imagine mixing for my 77 gallon tank.

yea, 77 gallons would be a lot. I just purchased the boat, so one of the previous owners must have done the swap. Was just curious as to the frequency that this conversion.

It is fairly common for older VRO equipped OMC motors to have their VRO systems disconnected. That in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a real pain to mix that much premix on larger boats. On a Montauk it is not too much of a burden.
By not having the VRO system you also loose the benefit of the economy of the VRO system as premix is a constant 50:1 ratio of gasoline to oil.

when I bought my new 50 HP Johnson (Last year), I specifically ordered it WITHOUT VRO. I just don't trust that tiny little rubber diaphram they call an oil pump. If I mix the oil and fuel, I KNOW that it's mixed, not praying that the little pump is working, one less thing to worry about, no low oil alarms etc. I know, it's only a little 50 Hp, so mixing a 6 gallon tank is really no big deal, guess I'm just "Old School", with not a lot of fuel to mix.
