I've been looking for a nice classic 15 in southern california with not much success. I either want a bare hull or a complete boat with a relatively new motor (yamaha preferably). My budget is $10k so if it is a bare hull, I need to count on a new four stroke 60 to run me $6k plus cables.



Will $10k get me what I'm looking for?

What's the most you've seen a classic 15 go for?

Keep looking on CL, here or evil bay. The folks here can advise you once you find one to look at. You should be able to find a real nice one with a four stroke for under your price range. This market favors your situation. I've seen lots of nice classic 15 footers up here for 6k ish.

If you are looking for a PROJECT I have a 1976 15'. It was the first year they made the 15' hull. It was never stored in the water and it has no bottom paint so the foam is dry. There are spider cracks in many places, which is typical of older whalers if you are not familiar with them. I stripped the gelcoat off of the bow section and gunnels so this boat will need some body work and new gelcoat or paint. I have completed all the body work on the bottom. I have a mahogany super sport interior that will come with it as well as a new nav light, wrap around rail and full set of cushions. I also have an 01 70 hp 4-stroke evinrude which runs perfect but needs paint and a few aesthetic parts. I have the new decals for it and a new binnacle control as well. I also have a 70hp yamaha, 1987 I think, that needs a new piston. I believe I bought a gallon of gelcoat as well. Prices are $2200 for the hull and trailer with new interior and parts. $2000 for the evinrude and $500 for the yamaha. Let me know if you want pics or come by and see it. I am in san juan capistrano. The search for my whaler is over. I just purchased a '84 15' sport with an '87 70hp Yamaha. I've started to clean it up and I have an appt to take it to a mechanic on Tuesday for a survey. My focus right now is going to be on the motor to begin with to make sure it is reliable and won't die when I'm out with my wife and my 18 month old daughter. After a while we'll revarnish the wood and address the minor gelcoat chips. should be fun.

I've posted a picture on my personal page and hope to have more soon. There are some screw holes in the back (battery tie down?) that I want to fix/fill before I get into any sort of aggressive cleanup. What's the best thing to use to clean up and old interior? What should I used to clean around the trim motor? some sort of degreaser?

I've read that bleach and softscrub are powerful but bad for the gelcoat. I'm leaning towards simple soap to start to see where that gets me and then upgrading to something like Starbright Deck Wash if I'm not satisfied. Down the road I'll probably clean the gelcoat with something like Buff Magic followed by the Starbright Teflon polish (these products seem to have good reviews on this site). suggestions?
