In investigating the purchase of a mooring cover for my 150 Montauk, to keep the tree droppings out of it and the bilge, it is not as simple as I thought. The boat has both bow rails and side rails, and I use mooring whips to keep it from banging into the dock. If the rails are under the canvas which is the typical design, it will create an interference problem when the whip lines are attached to the cleats.

The dealer has Mills looking into a custom cover that does not cover the rails, and that would leave the cleats exposed through a slit. I think the cover would have to be at gunnel level on both bow and stern. Not sure how you would keep puddles from forming on the cover with this scenario or exactly how it would be designed.

Anyone else, maybe with a 170 or 150 Montauk have this issue? I am waiting for the response from Mills through the dealer, and I hope the cost doesn't break the bank. The standard cover is plenty expensive as it is.

Larry -

Mills can make a cover that works, I'm sure.

Just so everyone knows, while you can go through a dealer, you can also contact Mills directly.

Believe it or not, neither Mills nor Great Lakes could make a cover that would accommodate mooring whip lines. They couldn't figure a way to do it without having a chafing problem. A cover for when it is on the trailer is no problem, just when you use mooring whips. The whips put tension on the line inboard, or away from the dock, and with tide and wind changes the lines need to be able to move.

I didn't anticipate that when I got the whips, but I still like the way they protect the boat.
Meanwhile, I made a screen backing for the bilge cover to keep stuff out of there, which was the main motivation for the cover, other than just keeping the boat nice.
