Does anyone know about the Johnson ocean runner engines? I saw a boat with one and I am not sure about the models. I heard the Ficht engine should be avoided like the plague but what about the ocean runners?

Harley,

You don't mention the year or the size.... ??

However, the Ocean Runners were great engines. Just make sure they are not the Ficht engines from 1998 to 2000...

I run a 90hp ocean runner on my Montauk and LOVE it. A friend of mine has the regular 90hp Johnson and a equally sized boat. My Ocean Runner out performs his 20% in speed, fuel economy, and torque.

Your right Joe, my fault. The year is 1995-2000. The size is the 150-225 hp. I heard the Fichts were the main reason OMC took a dive.

They were on the right track for sure. I'd read it was a lubrication issue also, but it was that the engines were tested at high speed mainly and performed well. However, at low speed under load, the combustion temp was too low and soot formed in the cylinders, leading to quick engine failure.
