I have a 17' Montauk; with a Honda 90 steering has become very tight lubed the hell out of the steering arm but it's still tight. I am guessing it is the original cable
Would a new cable help or am I better to go to hydraulic. Has anyone installed one and What problems did you run into? The wheel now has about 3” of loose travel before it gets tight.

Bobhil,

I would disconnect the cable from the engine end and make sure the engine turns freely.
Then turn the steering wheel and see of the cable moves freely without the engine attached.

You can replace just the cable which is an easy job.

If the steering helm and cable is bad, I would suggest replacing the entire system with the BayStar Hydraulic system from Teleflex. It is not cheap at about $500 but well worth the money if you plan on keeping the boat. The installation is also very simple for this system.
