On my Nauset I have a cleat that is similar to the attached teardrop cleat. I have been looking at other boats and can't seem to find any consistancy. What cleat would have been original in 1963 (or there about)?

The 1963 Nauset had no cleats at all. The tear drop cleat was never a Whaler piece of hardware. Early Whalers used the norman pins as cleats, that is all.
In fact, on Whalers less than 17 feet in length, I do not think Whaler ever used cleats at all until the 1990s. Norman pins, eyes and rail stanchions sufficed until then.

Thanks Tom. I will give up trying to find replacements like these (with 4 screw holes) and find a stanard style cleat. These things are horrible in real use.
Now if I can find a cleat that matches the existing holes, I'll be set.

David -
Before going cleat shopping, make a template of the screw holes on a piece of paper. Use it on the candidate to ensure proper lineup. I did this on my RPS handles to ensure a proper fit.

Or, you can fill the holes with MarineTex, and find a cleat that covers the holes, and drill new holes. Might be easier.

I'm going to start with just pulling one cleat and taking it to West Marine. That will at least give me an idea if the existing holes line up to something modern. Apparently those 4 hole teardrop cleats aren't made any more, not that I like them.
