So i have decided to but the antena for the vhf at the stern to free up space on the console i ran the wire through the tunnel only to find that it won't reach to the radio. is there an extension i can buy? is it regular coax that i can use a regular household wire for?

You should be able to pick up a double female barrel connector and then another lenght of cable with a PL259 connector on both ends at most marine stores or Radio Shack. It will probably be too long for your needs, so just roll it up and tie it off with wire ties, but do not cut it. It is not the same coax that is used around the house for cable TV. They make a crimp on type connector that I would not recomend. The ready made one will be soldered. It would also be a good idea to heat-shrink at the connection, but if you don't have heat shrink that large, then you something like Liquid Lectric Tape

The coax for your VHF is 50 ohm. The coax for your TV at home is 75 ohm. There are a variety of coax cables at Radio Shack that are 50 ohm. Any will be fine. If you are only a couple of feet short, see if there is a jumper cable that is the right size. Just make sure it is a 50 ohm cable. It will be advertised that way.
