I was told today that my boat was never designed to "properly" carry the modern 4S....too heavy...throws the hull off from what it was designed to do.....
The first motor was a 1963 Merc 650 SEL...big sucker...
Can anyone tell me the weight of that motor?...can't seem to find it online?
Any Mercheads out there?.....;)

Best I could do Dan was the 1960 models, the 60 hp weighed 185 and the 70 hp was 190 lbs...

NADA only goes back to 1974 and the 650 from that year was 195 lbs, so that's got to be the ballpark eh?

I can only give a comparison, not actually what you are looking for.

The original 75 HP Johnson 2 stroke (4 cylinder if I remember right) was 265# per the owners manual.

Current engine is 365# I believe.

danedg. I went to John`s website but didn`t see your question, so I asked it for you. I will be surprised if no answer comes.

The 1963 Merc 650 weighed just under 200 pounds if memory serves me. That is nothing but the Nauset can handle over 400 pounds on the transom. 350 pounds should not be a problem at all.

Answer from John`s Old merc. Q & A website

from larry----maybe 185

I would go with Tom`s estimate. They were great engines, mine was from the late `60`s. A a pair of them would be nice,(and sound nice) on your 17 footer.

Aw Hell...
I wish that motor was still in Whaler heaven...but it went all to hell in the late 70's...
Too bad...I just wondered how much it weighed....
