What type and size anchor are people using on their 16'-17' hulls?
I want something to fit in the old sized well...which is small...this is on a 1966.

Search for a thread here called "Anything really fit in the anchor locker." We had a good discussion of this a few months ago and you may find your answer there. I personally like what is called a Grapnel Anchor, but there are other suitable options.

I use this anchor. Now, I haven't used it a lot but so far it works well with my 18' Dauntless.

Watch out the points are very sharp. My son took off without bringing it up. Needless to say, a gelcoat repair followed.

The best anchor that will fit snugly in the 16/17 well is a 'navy' type anchor, coated (painted or vinyl). Google 'Seasense navy anchor' or 'Boater Sports navy anchor'. The navy type anchor is like a very heavy, stubby, danforth. It has wide flukes and won't pierce anything on the boat. The weight and shape make it a perfect, compact unit that holds great in all types of seabeds. It fits in the well with 5' of chain and 50' of 3/8 twisted nylon, with room left over for a six pack of loose cans of beer. I can't remember whether I have the 10# or 15# (probably the 10).

I used the Navy type anchor for years, it fit well in the 15' model. I went to a smaller "Danforth type", because, in my area of operation (Bay and creeks w/ moderate currents) it has better holding power on the "Sand/Mud" Bottom. The Navy type relies more on it's "Weight" to hold the boat to the bottom than it does it's flukes digging in. The "Navy type" does fit very well in the bow locker even with a chain.
