My 26 gallon capacity tank has a slight seeping leak at the bottom where the seam of the tank nearly touches the floor. I was wondering if anyone has experienced a problem like this , I was hoping to drain the tank and use some kind of compound to seal the leak from the outside . Its not a bad leak but i could use some suggestions on a good solution for this problem.\

Mike -

Welcome to Whaler Central!

Is it a fiberglass, plastic or aluminum tank?

In case you can't repair it, note that Pate and Tempo, leading manufacturers of fiberglass and plastic tanks, respectively, have gone out of business. Moeller has a line of plastic tanks that will work for you.

Short answer is: replace the tank. If the seam is leaking, you're all done. By the time you correct ALL of the actual and potential leak points in this, you will have spent too much money and too much time. Even then, you'll be left with that nagging feeling that you "hope this holds!" Go right to the replacement is my suggestion.
The best of luck to you. Welcome to WhalerCentral and thanks for your question.

Phil,

Moeller is now out of business as well. The remaining stock that is out there is all the will be left.

I guess the father stepped back in and shut things down because he was unhappy with were the Kids were taking the company.

So am I reading this correctly, that there is not one company left making the 26 gal fuel tanks?? So I guess that means I need to buy one now for three years from now when I need to replace my current tank??
Thanks,
MDBayMontauk

Yes, if you want a large plastic tank or two 12 gallon ones for your 17' hull you need to get one now.

I just spoke with Mirax who used build the Aluminum OEM 12 gallon Montauk Tanks that where just like the Tempo ones. They still make the tanks and complete with fittings they are $225 plus shipping per.

Moeller is NOT out of business. This rumor has cropped up elsewhere and there is no truth to it at all. I just spoke with Moeller on the phone and they are alive and well and still making fuel tanks.

It is true that they have closed their Ohio office and consolidated operations to their Tennessee facility.

Tom,

I was at my local Marine store and they one 1 12 gallon Moeller tank left. I asked if they had another they said not in stock. They could order one from another store if I wanted it however, they were able to get any more from the manufacture. So, I checked with my local mechanic and he thought they were going out of business as well.

Not true? I had not heard it on the internet as speculation.

I ended up finding the Moeller 12 gallon tanks, New, on Ebay for cheaper than any local store even after shipping.

!!!!!!!!!!! Hang on..... If you like that tank, you can fix it pretty cheaply. The following link is a company that sell tank re-sealing kits.

Why are the above deck fuel tank firms going out of business?

Do you think it may be because of lawsuits by stupid people who do stupid things around a tank of gas!

Pate is the only above deck fuel tank manufacturer that has gone out of business and that was because of ethanol in gasoline which does do well with the fiberglass Pate used. Lawsuits have nothing to do with it.

I need to clarify on my post about the re-sealing. The original post did not indicate what material the tank was made from. The re-sealing kits are for metals or fiberglass, not plastic.
