i plan to get my carbs rebuilt before the summer begins, here are my two options, i can rebuild them myself and be sure the job is done correctly, or i can have my uncle rebuild them, he is a mecanic (automotive) problem is i have heard he does sloppy work and i dont know how long it will be before he finishes. i may not get them back until august or something:@. i have never rebuilt carbs before, i have the manual and the gasket kits. but dont know how dificult it is to do. i am worried that if i touch them at all the engine will wind up at the shop and cost $100000 to fix. any feedback?

Just had mine rebuilt on my 1995 Merc. 150. I paid $200. Don't accept sloppy work. One carb running lean do a lot of damage. I would try to do it myself instead. If you lack the confidence in your ability to do it yourself bite the bullet and boat with peace of mind. Dave

The sloppy work thing would bug ME, I re-built my carbs once on another engine, I recall it was NOT that bad, buy a re-build kit from a "GOOD" outboard shop, they can and SHOULD walk you through it, or just drop them off to be re-built properly, "Tarpun" is right, the wrong move here could be expen$ive in the long run, and it could be a "Boatless" summer if something is done wrong, Not worth it.
If you're NOT sure, I would drop them off at a reputable place for the re-build, bolt-on and go.
