I'm ready to start ordering the parts that I will need to install hydraulic steering to my 1984 Outrage20. If anyone has advice about what I need and where to order it, I will really appreciate it.

Roger, e-mail Bob, with your needs , he'll get what you need for a price you can't refuse. I just got a brand new Seastar with a 2.4 Helm for way cheap !

Thanks for the suggestion Jim. I contacted Bob and it just so happens that since I have a 175 hp Etec, I need a heavier duty (Seastar) system than the one you got (Baystar) so it will cost me $200 more. The cut off for the less expensive Baystar is 150 hp. My thoughts are that I am better off going with Teleflex suggestions even if only to give me peace of mind.
The parts Bob recommends are HC5345 cylinder and HH5269 helm.

I also need to find out if I will need 16' or 18' hoses.

If anyone knows how I can find out which hose length to use, please let me know. And I would appreciate any other input you guys have about this subject.

I own a 1989 22' outrage. I bought a Sea Star system from West Marine which came with 22' hoses. When I removed the old steering cable, I measured it and it was 18' long. I traded in the 22' cables for 18's, and the 18's were too short! I wound up buying back the 22's. All I'm telling you is be careful if you get shorter hoses.

Roger,

You V-20 is a little different than the later 20's and obviously the 22's.....
The 20 foot hull is obviously 2 feet shorter than the 22'...
The basic difference between the 20 and the 22 is that 2 feet has been removed from the aft end only.

16' cables can be used on 18 foot hulls but some people still use 18' cables on the 18 hull.
I would think that you need 18' cables but am not positive.

I would use a piece of 3/8" rope or something similar and run it like you would the hose.
Measure the length and this should be close. Just a thought.

I assume those hoses must have some kind of special end on them that is difficult to install.
I think you are right about the 18' being the one for my boat but I will communicate a little more with the supplier. And I will see if I can get my mechanic to verify the length as well.
