Anyone have an opinion on this motor? Parts still available?

Hi John,

I had one of these, as well as several other 4 cylinder merc inlines. It was a very smooth running engine. Mine was 85HP (same engine) may have been a '79' When prop shaft rated engine became popular in the mid 80's it dropped to a 75 HP... There were many of these made, you should not have too much trouble with parts.
good luck

I have got a 78 merc 80, just like that one. Mine has a bad cylinder, but all the parts are available. It was a tank before the previous owner got a hold of it!

CES,

Not sure if you are looking for a used motor or not but I did come across a nice one on my local craigslist. late 70's Merc 85 wT/T for $800. Can not beat freshwater motors. PM me and I will send you the info if you want it.

Very good motor. A friend is currently running one on his runabout and loves it. He is also the original owner! Parts are still available. Stone and Sons in Houston has gobs of parts and if they don't have it, theu can get it or will direct you to someone who can. That's a good lookin' motor! Paul

I see you are in Fl. Has this motor spent its life in the Florida sun and salt water. Mercs when corroded are notoriously hard to take apart. Also I don`t know if mercs used stainless driveshafts back in 1980. If not, a real headache to change the water pump.
