where is the best location for a vhf antena on a montauk? i think that mounting it on the side of the console will get anoying because you will bump into it every time you try to walk by it so i have been considering mounting on top of the console right in the middle but then you need to look at it all the time when you drive. is there anywhere else to mount it? i have an 8 foot antena by the way and it needs to fold so i can fit unded the bridge

Have you considered the rail in the stern corner on a rail mount? The mount looks like
THIS. I found this position on my Outrage keeps it far enough back people will not grab onto it when trying to board.
With a rail mount, you can lay it down for the bridge and storage. I don't have a photo of my setup and it is snowing outside so I can't take a photo for ya.

Using a rail mount at the stern worked nicely on the Sakonnet I once owned. It folded down out of the way while fishing.
Having the antenna at the stern is very convenient for routing of the coaxial cable as well.

I have it on the port side of my "sport 15" (8' glass shakespear) stern, it fold's down, it's also a "Solid core" antenna so if anyone steps on it while folded down flat (nylon ratchet mount), it won't break. It's a fast "take down" too.

I have mine mounted on the grab rail above the center console on the right side. I use the mount referenced by CBO above and it folds down when I am trailering the boat or need to put it in the garage. Since it is in the center of the boat it is also out of the way while fishing.
Thanks,

Great thread. I still haven't installed my radio and antena. Since I just bought full canvas from Mills, I'm thinking the rear rail mount might be my best choice.
I'll get a better idea when I get it back from Mills. They stored it indoors for me all winter. :D

I have full mills canvas on my boat and the antenna folded down against the RPS poses no problems for the canvas. Just a thought.

Mine was mounted on top of the starboard gunnel [see first pic on my PP]. I'm about to replace the antenna and radio, and was wondering if there was a better spot - so thanks for the thread.

Thanks for the input MD. I'll have to try that spot too.
