I just bought this little boat and I want to set it up with a 25hp Mercury. I have one that is a 15" Tiller Handle. Will it work?

Welcome aboard. I am pretty sure you need a 20" shaft on a 1976 Whaler - If you can show a picture of your boat it would help - Is the transom flat across the top or does it have a notch down where the motor mounts?
Does it look like this?

Yes my transom looks just like your transom. Looks like I am motor hunting. I've got on older 40hp Johnson...maybe a 1976. Are there Center Consoles that would work with this little boat or do I need to customize one? I sure would like to stand and pilot with a 40hp on this little boat.

Welcome! It is a GREAT little boat. There's a link somewhere on this site to a custom job that was done on one like yours. Do a search for "keltoncrew" and you should find it.

Yup - you definitely need a 20" motor -- There have been a few center console conversions. Keltoncrews is really nice. I have seen some guys use small center consoles made for Carolina skiffs too... it really depends on what kind of look you are looking for.

I can't find "keltoncrew" on this site...I'll keep trying.
I think I may try that older 40hp I have...it's a 20" shaft for sure.
I am thinking of using mahogany to construct a center console. My whaler needs a great deal of tlc...I don't have time to fix all the fiberglass before the trout start biting....I'm fishing as-is this summer and may work on the hull and glass next winter. I picked up boat, trailer, mahogany benches and side rails, new-in-box bimini top, stainless rails, steering cable and wheel for $600. I guess that is a fair price. The more I look at the boat, the more I like it. Get used to seeing me on here, because I'll have a lot of questions...I'm sure.

Ok...so I my boat is going to look identical to keltonkrew....that is exactly what I want to do with mine. I might put a mahogany box for my captains chair rather than a cooler/seat, but this is it. Thanks for the link guys.

I've got to say that he did an incredible job on it! I don't think I will ever have the patience to finish mine out that well, but I can dream!
