Is anyone out there running a 115 eTec on their 19-20 outrage? I am looking at powering a 19.6 70's model outrage. I would like to stay in the V4 engine for fuel efficiency, weight, price, etc... I am concerned about the power since most of these I see have 150hp+ on them. Anyone? Anyone?

All comments or opinions are welcome here guys.

Thanks!

Rob

Minimum HP requirement was 65 - Max was 175. She is a light hull.

Here is a thread on a guy who repowered with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke - he got 38MPH out of her ... I would expect more from the Etec

If you're not in a hurry, E-Tec will be introducing their 130 hp 4 cylinder. Not positive when but it shouldn't be that much longer.

I have seen 2 of these hulls with 115's and talked to one owner. Seems that the 115 was adequate for the hull. The light deadrise on the hull is a great plus for powering with the smaller motor. I would myself want a 150 though.

Do you have to go with a new motor? What about a older 130 or 140 OMC V-4? My dealer here in Detroit has a lot of really nice clean freshwater motors. I am almost sure he would ship for a whaler owner.

Joe,

I have heard the v-4 may not be here as soon as one might think.

Jeff,

You never really know about rumors but the 130 is supposed to be out this year.
The only people that really know is BRP.

The 130 is supposed to be on the same block as the 115 and therefore will weigh the same.
I am considering the 130 as opposed to the heavier 150 for my Outrage 18 although I still haven't made up my mind. I like the idea of the 4 cylinder...

Joe/Jeff,

I am REALLY a fan of the eTec engines. I am not looking at the 150 for fuel reasons. I am still trying to purchase the 19'6" and working a few leads. I am trying to calculate and budget to see how much I am willing to spend to get the hull. Since it has come to the point where I am real serious. I am looking at buying a nicer boat ready to go and selling my Montauk -- originally I was going to keep both till I found a project boat and completed the restoration. I am so confused because there is really nothing wrong with my boat and getting another at the expense of mine today scares the hell out of me. Especially when I am going to a hull that is 20 years older...

Just to clarify - the 115 HP E-TEC IS a 4-cylinder motor. It is currently the ONLY 4-cylinder block in the E-TEC lineup, but the 130 HP motor (long rumored and hoped for) may be finally in the works.

I would think that this hull will do just fine with a 115 HP motor. The larger sibling 21' Outrage (from the 1970's) runs close to 50 MPH on a 150 HP motor and is rated for 200 HP.

That said, as some of you know, I'm not a big fan of mediocre powering.

The larger HP motor will have better resale when it is time to sell. It will also provide you with reserve power when it is needed in difficult conditions, or when you've fully loaded your boat with fish, buddies, or worst case - water.

I would strongly reconsider the 150. You will not likely notice a large difference in fuel economy at most speeds (Cruise and trolling) because it takes the same HP to achieve those speeds no matter which motor you're running...the 115 is just putting out closer to max capacity than the 150 at the same speed - i.e. it is working harder...especially to push a very full boat.

Your E-TEC motor will "tattle" on you though...watch out! When it is time for the 300 hour service, it will tell you and your mechanic how you've been behaving - how many seconds the engine has been operated and at what RPM. It provides you with a great profile that, in my case (and to my suprise), revealed that most boating is done at idle RPM or slightly above....where your fuel economy is outstanding on both the 150 HP motor AND the 115 HP motor.

Good luck with your decision.
