I'm thinking about joining - I have 2 questions...
Is this suitable for a 13 Whaler?
Can this be done as a day trip from southern NJ?

I'd say both are possible on a good day but I hope someone with more experience will respond.
That seems like one hell of a day trip so you might concider finding a room.
This trip seems like a great idea and I am very much looking forward to it.

If I could find a campground I could come up with my Motorhome. The only problem would be launching the Whaler. I would need someone to drop it in for me. There is no way I'm backing my 36 Foot class A down the ramp. :o

I've heard of a launch ramp near the G.W.B. haven't seen it, I'm a 2 hour boat ride from the city and may opt to trailer to a closer location. Any thoughts on a convenient venue for all ? This should be fun! If we come up with a common launch/meeting location launching will not be an issue for anyone.

Is there a boat ramp at Liberty Park? If so, that would be a good place to launch so nobody is driving through the city with a trailer.
Scott, if I can make it I'll be happy to launch your boat for you. I won't be able to give a definate answer until pretty close to the event though (because of the boat and my job ). If I can't make it by boat I'll TRY to arrange for some overhead photos from my 'occupational vehicle'... Look for something loud and bright orange!

I would'nt go through "Hell Gate" in a 15 footer, that RR bridge is one creepy place ! especially at the wrong tide when all of L.I. sound empty's into it. maybe if we bypassed "Hell Gate" I'd go, we don't have to go through "Hell gate" do we ?

I hope you make it MW.

Hells Gate with the tide in your favor is of no concern, even with it not in your favor your in a Whaler ! I'm more concerned with the natives tossing items off the bridges. Either way it's interesting.

I know there is a public ramp near the Marine Parkway bridge in the "Rockaways" (closest one I know of), we could launch there (Jamaica Bay) and go out of "Rockaway Inlet" but, "Staten Island" would be closer, It's a bit west past my normal area of operation, I'll check around for other Ramps, one closer would be better, maybe a trip to Jones beach or somewhere else would be a good trip, and more protection (Barrier beaches) for us Little 13's and 15 foot model's, I'm not sure if I can run with the "BIG DOG's" out the inlet but, it sure would be a blast if we could get everyone together.

On the NJ side there are several ramps, GWB has ramp and parking. In Nyack NY, there is also has a ramp. Nyack had a permit requirement. You will need to call. Last time I launched from Nyack, there was a someone collecting fees.
I believe there is one liberty state park, in Jersey City, but not sure.
There was a also a ramp near the Meadow Lands that leads to the Newark Bay, open to the Hudson, That is a bit of a ride itself, and not the most scenic.
Hells gate is a creepy place, with tide against you and huge wakes reverberating off the sea walls makes this a place to avoid even in whaler.
Something to note on windy day lower Manhattan as well as the wider sections of that river can get a bit rough and wet... Particularly if it is a busy weekend.

I grew up in Brooklyn and I'm very familiar with the area. I think a " staging area" needs to be decided so people can decide if they are going to cruise or trailer to the area. I would be coming from upstate so I would definately trailer my boat. If you contact some marinas in the area we might be able to get a group rate on the ramp. New Jersey or Staten Island may be the best spot. You come right out into New York harbor off the Statue of Liberty. I'm in if it's a good weekend for me. ChrisG.

You are right Chris. We need to come up with a staging area and NYC isn't likely to be it. Anybody have ideas? I can find marinas searching the net, but it would be better if someone could suggest a known reputable place.
Keep in mind, Scrimshaw is coming from CT and he is the one who started this thread.

Jersey City, NJ has a public ramp in Liberty State Park. This is located near the NJ Turnpike and is easily accessible. No vehicles are to be in the park after 10:00 pm.
I believe there is a restaurant. There is no restroom, water or power at the ramp. I think there is a porta potty. There are enough parking spots for vehicles + trailers. I believe the cost is $14.00 per day per boat/vehicle/trailer.
Another good spot is Great Kills Staten Island. This public ramp is located in the Gateway National Park on Hylan Blvd in Staten Island. This is also easily accessible by main road and the ramp / facility is great. There is a per day fee, whic I dont know. I get the season pass for $50.00. This park with allow overnight parking as long as you let the ranger office know you will stay. There is no power or water here. There is porta potty. There is plenty of parking and is a very nice facility and park. There are restaurants shouting distance from the ramp and accessible by boat.
Liberty State Park ramp is very near the Statue of Liberty. Great Kills is about 5 miles from the Verrazano Bridge entrance to the Narrows.

Thanks Pete. Those sound like excellent places to meet.
Anyone else have suggestions?
As Jim said, some people will probably come by water. We will need a good amount of dock space for all of the boats. (100s I'm sure) :D
Others will probably meet up with us along the way.
I most likely will be trailering and I can get to anywhere the group decides to meet.

Maybe the SurfSide 3 dealership at Chelsea Pier (now part of Marine Max) wants to lend us some dock space! They are a huge Whaler dealer, why wouldn't they want 10 or 20 'potential' customers hanging around their docks?

The Chelsea Pier location is great. There is much around you there. Its a great part of NYC. Many possibilities for a fun outing.
The Jersey City ramp will not offer as much.
Great Kills / Gateway Park ramp is in the Great Kills harbor with several marinas. I know at least one marina / restaurant that can accomodate a few dozen whalers with slips (but would they want to ?). There is also good street access here for a walk around the area.
I'll get the name of the place. I'm having a senior moment.

Thanks for the offer. I guess at this point everyone will just need to figure out where we are going. I have no opinions as I have never boated in that area. Obviously the more 13 friendly the better... unless I find something else by then. :o:D

Well, I called the Marina Cafe in Great Kills Harbor and they said they do not control the slips and could not commit dock space to an event.
I always just launch, head over to the restaurant, dock and hit the Tiki bar for a snack and drink. Never had an issue. I learned something new. Anyway, dont ask dont tell.

I live very near Peekskill and George's Island Park just south of Peekskill. I am hoping to launch from one of those. Or I could be persuaded to trailer a bit further south but I would not want to get too close to the city.

I plan to plot a westerly course and enter New York Harbor via Hell's Gate. I have navigated this stretch of water when it has presented itself as a Mill pond and as an Olympic kayac course with class 5 rapids, both situations bring a smile to my face. Only with extreem seas would I pull and haul as New York Harbor is easily within my reach. Jim

Looks like we have quite a few people coming but we still need to agree on at least one meeting place. So far, somewhere near the Statue of Liberty sounds best to me. Pete has come up with a couple locations near there. I think someone also mentioned Staten Island.

Hows this ? June 7th with rain date of the 21st, meet up in waters around the Statue , 10:30 AM, this will allow for those traveling. Amass and head up the Hudson. I'm game for anything with more votes. The trip around the island shouldn't take all that long so the 10:30 meet time still allows for some pokin around.

Staten Island / Great Kills harbor public ramp is great, but without a place such as a restaurant with doc space to accommodate all the boats, Jersey City may be best.
Jersey City public launch in Liberty State Park is a stones throw from the Statue where you all may gather. This give an opportunity to tie up somewhere out of the way if needed, and launch near the meeting area.
That few miles around Staten Island to the Statue can be a little much for the smaller boats if the sea and wind are up.
I wear a mouth guard sometimes on my 17 Montauk............... I could slow down but..........

I have done it twice in a Nantucket. Launched from the ramp under the GW Bridge in NJ. No problems there except when very windy down river. Hellsgate is nothing to worry about. Check local notice to mariners about Spiten dyvil RR Bridge as it has restricted openings till sometime in April. It could go longer. I would go if dates fit. Everyone I have taken along was really enthralled!

A PUBLIC LAUNCHING RAMP AT THE BAYSIDE MARINA, IN LITTLE NECK BAY.
IS IS VERY CLOSE TO THE THROGS NECK BRIDGE.

I think Scrimshaws plan to meet somewhare around the Statue at 10:30 is a good one. And Liberty State Park seems like the closest place to the statue where we can all gather.
I'm not sure yet where I will launch but Jersey City public launch seems like a good bet.
It doesn't really matter where people launch, but what do you guys think of the plan of meeting at Liberty State Park near the Jersey City public launch at 10:30.
Keep the ideas coming guys but, I think we should get the meeting spot set in stone fairly soon. Then maybe we could plan the route in case some people would like to meet up with us along the way.

I have launched a few times from Jersey City. The area nearest to the ramp is shallow and there is not much dock space. The "channel" is narrow. Dont count on tying up at the ramp or hanging around with power in that immediate area. There will also be plenty of boat traffic.
Bring a hook and plan on anchoring near by out of the way. If youre early you can anchor and enjoy the view. Make a plan for radio communication.
The cell phone thread is good.
There is a marina in the park. I do not know if you can use any of the facilities.

I would like to go but, I think it's asking a bit much from my 15 footer. I think that if my boat "HAD TO" it could make the journey, lower NY bay is pushing my boat past it's limits in the shipping lanes, and I'm not too "hot" on the idea about going through "Hell Gate" either (if the flotilla goes that way). I do wish everyone a safe voyage, and a safe trip, and please keep the PFD's on at all times on those rivers.

Always wanted to make this trip in Das BOat, but not sure about the trailering issues from Va. Additional problems are that i have the honor of doing the Potomac Swim the week before, and the Chesapeake Bay Swim the following week whcih conflicts with your date. But I will check with some people to be sure about the Chesapeake Bay swim date....I thought about putting in if I go underneath the GW bridge, never ben there so i need some directions should I attend:)

My issues for this has always been the long trailer ride from Virginia...No the best thing for my back, and secondly, the Chesapeake bay Swim event is that weekend and i usually participate..
But I'll look and see...
My Trailer is the original trailer< Karavan, I greese here regularly and flush her, but don't do uch else so thats the other concern. I don't have to trailer at all and use her for winter storage mostly:)
If I dont trailer much this year, i will probably sell the trailer this year.......

Well, here we are in 4 weeks the largest collection of Boston Whalers ever will converge upon The Statue of Liberty then navigate their way around Manhattan. We have drawn the attention of the people in Edgewater Florida (thats right Whaler)who will be providing us with trinkets, Tee-shirts,first aid kits ect. The time is upon us to firm up participation, make plans with others who will make the journey in your direction. The crew of the Scrimshaw will plot a course towards the West, meet up with a Ribside and Menemsha off Northport N.Y. then proceed towards Mamaroneck, N,Y meeting up with Robert for our entry into the Harbor, anyone heading in this direction feel free to contact me as there is safety in numbers and the more the merrier ! I work in NYC right next to hell gate. The water is not as bad as some would think. I have been through there many times in a 14' alum boat with a 9.9 engine. It does get rough at times but nothing life threatening. The fee for launching in Nyack (near the Tappan Zee Bridge) is $20 for the day or $150 for the season. The two things you need to be aware of is the airmail you might get from the people on the bridges. I haven't seen much in recent years. The next thing is the RR bridge between the Bronx and Manhattan. The clearence at high tide is only 2-3 ft. The bridge opens for the circle line, not sure who else it opens for. Any other questions about the area I would be happy to answer.
PS I plan to be there with my 6 yo son in tow!

Harley, my crew also stands at the ready to make the journey via the "Gate" .Again, I will start from Black Rock Harbor in Bridgeport,Ct some time around 8AM the passage towards NYC will see many additions as we proceed west, the flotilla will grow along the way as vessels meet up ,plans are to fly "The Flag" off Capt.Robert's Outrage that will join the armada in Mamaroneck,N.Y. for it's entrance to the Harbor then onward to the Statue. The plans remain loose as to participants arrival in the waters of the Statue of Liberty where the Flotilla will amass for a 10:30 AM departure head up the Hudson and cicle the city. Thats all I got from my end ! Weather and other conditions may affect the actual tide levels.

Hi all,
Prior obligations have been set aside for this much more important (and fun) event. So count in another Montauk. I would like to meet up with those leaving out of Northport L.I.. Are any of you watching this thread? If not, Jim do you know any details on that ? It seems that you have contact with them.
Look forward to this gathering, Josh

I am hoping to be squared away in time for the event and in the water with our 21' CQ, sailing out of Westbrook, CT . What are your thoughts on a start time assuming cruise speed ~ 25-30 mph in order to rendezvous with your party off of Black Rock?

Luckydog, you'll be added and will join with the crew from Lloyds Neck N.Y. , look foward to here from them, Lil Joe, I wouldn't guess more than an hour for you. The Capts from Long Island can contact Kurtgett@verizon.net for times Connecticut boats can contact me at Outrage21@gmail.com, we'll figure out logistics, Thanks

Ed, I have the standard two 12 gallon tanks but I can also carry a portable 5 gallon tank in my front cooler if need be. I was assuming I would be able to refuel at some point (I will need to). I have a thirsty carbed 90hp. Round trip looks to be about 106 miles, figured I could make it about half way but would like to refuel prior to the 10:30 meeting. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks, Josh

I would really love to go, but I dont know if Im going to be ready on have all the kinks worked out by then. I live on the south shore of Long island so I was thinking of launching in kings point or somewhere or in the great neck area. Anyone going to be launching near there? Has anoyone thought of possibly stopping at Chealsea Piers at the Marine Max Whaler dealer?? I wonder if they would be receptive?

Sounds like a great time!

Luckydog, if you're coming down the hudson like me, there are a few stops for fuel. There is one in NJ about 2 miles north of the GWB on the westside of the hudson. I would guess there are some more stations south of the GWB. I will be leaving Nyack at the Tappan Zee Bridge around 0900 hrs. I have a 27 gal tank which should be plenty for the trip.

Harley, I was going to leave from LI because I have folks there who can watch the baby and it is closer (by water) than leaving from Kingston. Trailering south is a posibility though. What is the launch ramp situation in Nyack?

I am hoping to launch from Peekskill on the Hudson but I am not sure if I will have the boat ready.
Lucky Dog the Peekskill launch is easy and plenty of parking if you want to launch from there.
If I am not ready is it possible to sign on as a deck hand?

Howard, Already have another couple on board, but thanks. Sounds like you need a couple of "sick days" to get your boat ready.:D

Lucky, the Nyack ramp has a decent amt of parking. I've never seen it full. The ramp is new and straight forward. It is free now, but the rate is $20 after Memorial day.

Thanks Harley, If I decide not to leave from LI I will meet up with you down there in Nyack. I was going to trailer to LI so that we could leave our baby with her grandparents for the day, she's a bit young for such a long boat ride. I have to break her in slowly, @ 24 inches she can't see over the console yet.:o

Jim,
Is there a complete list of people that are participating?
Has the final date(s) been set?
You never know who might want to show up at the last minute........

Joe, this one is difficult to count ! It's been out there on 3 sites for awhile now. I recieve countless e-mails from all over the place daily...who knows ? A request for "roll call " didn't amount to anything here, wish I knew how to get an accurate count . The date is June 7th, plans are to gather in the waters of the Statue of Liberty at 10:30 AM , we'll see ! Any help, ideas in coming up with a way to confirm participants would be great. I come up with 24 boats that I know of for sure, we'll see when we get there. Jim

Although we are unable to provide an accurate count as to numbers of vessels participating I can offer up new info.
USCG Sector Manhattan has identified this event and is looking towards providing escort vessels. To think from a daydream on a cold rainey day in Febuary we have now attracted the Factory and the government !!

The flotilla was contacted by Marine Max of Lindenhurst today, they asked to participate in our event and plan to bring out a 32 Outrage and other "goodies". With this addition and 12 new vessels joining us this week we can now with confidence state that this will be the largest
EVER collection of Boston Whaler boats in one place !!!!

Wow, just found this! I'm going to do all I can to try and make this trip in my 170 Montauk.
I used to be a guide in the harbor, and I did the 2 hour tours around Manhattan for NY Waterway, the trip is a blast.
Hell gate isn't a big deal, just watch for traffic and take the whirlpools slower than faster, and be sure to stay south of the green? day board off Randalls Island. Lot's of really big rocks lurking just below the surface on the RI side.
As mentioned the RR bridge along the Hudson will need to be notified but it sounds like the escort will probably handle that...
Wow, sounds great. I'll be launching in Norwalk. Where and when would the nearest rendezvous for me to hook up with some of you guys headed for the statue? Mamaronek? What time?
I'm going to need to think about fuel...
One more thing. The East River and Harbor in general can get real snotty just from traffic, add a little weather..., I'm thinking the earlier the better for the trip in.
Boy I hope I can pull this off.

Don't plan on the CG escort making the proper notifications for you (ie the RR bridge). They might do it, but they aren't associated with the bridge operator anymore than the typical boater, and they'll probably assume the flotilla has made the appropriate notifications yourself.

This morning we recieved a call from the USCG requesting we notify the flotilla that Flare Guns are not permitted in New York Harbor, the possession of such items will result in a hefty fine ! We were also contacted by Mr. Phil Wolhar,Director of Marketing for MarineMax N.E., he has promised to supply our Flagship for the event, a 345 Conquest with triple 275 Verados !!,more Tee-shirts and trinkets as well ! Metro-North has also communicated with excitement over the event offering 100% support with opening bridges as we pass, With that being said and knowledge of 100+ confirmed participants welcome to the largest ever collection of Whalers anywhere !!!!

The New York City Police Dept. Marine Division contacted us today and will monitor VHF channel 17,they offered to assist as needed ! Fox 5 NY has also come foward and expressed interest in this event . The logistics are complete and we need to offer a special thanks to Capt. Robert A.K.A 240 Outrage(BWOC) for his efforts in organizing this event ! Without his assist we wouldn't be where we are today....Thanks Robert ! All we need to do is pray for Fair Seas ! See everyone in Manhattan !!!

On another note; Thinking about fuel I decided to sit down with the charts and figure out some distances.
I am thinking of launching from Norwalk.
From Veteran's Memorial Park in Norwalk to the north side of the Statue it's approximately 40.1 nautical miles.
Statue to Statue around Manhattan I'm coming up with 31.4 NM.
If I do the entire trip from Norwalk that's 111.6 NM round trip. I'm thinking of a stopping at City Island to refill one of my 6 gallon cans both directions. Maybe not on the return if not necessary.
For those coming from the LI Sound, breaking off at Hell Gate to Head home a little sooner rather than completing the 'official' loop will save about 13-13.5 NM. Assuming the trip will be done in the clockwise direction.
I know there are some guys coming down the Hudson. Where are you planning to launch? The GWB site in Jersey is not good for me. Anyone coming from further north? Just wondering?
Dennis

There's a tentative plan to meet up at Greens Ledge, just west of Norwalk islands sometime around 7:30 or 8.
Exact time hasn't been set yet. But this looks like the spot.
A couple of us are launching from South Norwalk, Veteran's Memorial Park, probably right around 7 AM.

Boy, don't I feel lucky today! Stumbled on this thread and it took about two seconds to decide that I'll be cruising around Manhattan this Saturday.
We're in a 1966 13 footer with a 30hp motor. We got it last summer and have been out about a dozen times. All on the Sound except once a couple of weeks ago on Candlewood Lake. It's always a blast...well, there was the one barge run-in on a windy day under the Throgs Neck Bridge but, that's a story for another time.
Any suggestions on the best place to put our boat in? We're not against trailering over to Liberty State Park or thereabouts if that's the best option.
We're really looking forward to it!

Well it's 1614 hrs and I got back from the ride. It was a little rough in lower Manhattan bay. Aside from the rough waters downtown it was a great day. I came down the hudson with Luckydog and we made the statue around 1030. I had a problem with one of the carbs on my Yamaha and was able to make 3500 rpm max. The kicker worked really well. A special thanks to Josh (Luckydog) and his wife for sticking around and making sure my son and I got back ok. Can't wait for the next trip.

Thanks everyone who came and everyone who made this happen. It was great to meet a few fellow Whaler owners while experiencing something new to me. That was my first up close look at the Statue of Liberty and my first time around Manhattan by boat. I never put that many miles on my boat in one day before either.
Even though many of us had a few setbacks (fog and GPS died for me), it all came together very well.
I'm in next time too.

Greetings, all.
Congratulations!
You were all a great site to see!
I snapped a few photos of "The Convoy" moving up river at 11:10 AM today. I took the shots from the 28th floor of the Harborside Financial Center in Jersey City, N.J. Unfortulately, with all the haze and smog, visibility was pretty bad (as you saw first-hand).
There is one pretty good shot with the American Flag in the foreground (hopefully posted here). I have additional photos which I would be glad to send to any of you if you wish. Was that an '86 25' Revenge with blue canvas bringing up the rear of the group? If not, it looked like somebody with a whaler was trying to catch up to you all.
Congratulations to all once more! Sorry we could not make it (next time, for sure).

Joe, that was no 1986 25' Revenge, that was the biggest 1987 20' Revenge there is proving that if you have twin engines and one isn't working at the dock, YOU STILL GO! We had seven people and could only make about 15 MPH, we found the problem was a defective spark plug over lunch, had spares, but the group was gone. Yiger's Coastie flyby was awsome, and we still had a great time. If you have a picture of the little boat that could, send it to jackmack@ptd.net , Thank You!....Jack
