The old 1989 88HP Johnson has delivered for years but, alas, it's time has come. I would love to replace the engine with a new Honda 4 stroke 90HP but am a little concerned about weight. I'm wondering if anyone knows the engine weight specs for my 1989 Montauk?

While there is a maximum horsepower rating (100 hp), I have not seen a weight rating. I think the new Honda 90 is fine. It is less weight then it's predecessor. My guestimate is keep below 400 lbs.

I know of several owners with the earlier Honda 90 hp and it is okay. A bit stern heavy but not too much.

Take a look at this Quick Guide to Engine Choices we have on our site in the article section:

Joe:

This is helpful - but are you saying (because it is on the list) that the nex Honda 90HP 4 stroke is going to be ok from a weight perspective for my classic montauk?

Mike,

I am going by what people use on their Montauks or 16/17' hulls.
Obviously, the heavier engines will make the stern sit lower in the water. If a person is satisfied with that, then that is up to them.

Several members here have the Honda 90 on the back of their Montauks and say it is OK.
I always leave the decision up to the individual for their needs.

Here a some photos of members personal pages.

There are other members with personal pages that have the Honda 90 so you might want to look through the personal page section.

Good Luck with your decision.
