Need a new kill switch-Safety Lanyard for a 1996 17' Montauk. Would this be a control specific item? Or can I purchase them online? Any help would be appreciated thanks guys

This would depend on which engine you have. Gauges, Controls, Ignition Keys, etc., are not specific to Classic Boston Whaler boats.
If OMC, then contact your OMC/Bombardier dealer.
If Mercury, then see your Mercury dealer.
etc., etc.......

If you want an OMC one contact any local dealer and they could get it. I think last time I checked it was $55 for an entirely new switch and lanyard. There are some on ebay now and then. But honestly, you can just pick up a universal one at Theft (West) Marine.

Should be able to get one at Wal Mart pretty cheap. I bought one there and the lanyard has multiple clips to suit whatever motor you have. I needed one for a Yamaha and the clip was in there and works fine.

Now I just need to figure out why the boat still runs without one.

I see by your personal page that you have a Johnson motor.
What year? 1996 also?

If so, you have the system check system and you may have a key switch with a built-in safety switch. If so, then this built-in switch will still let you start the motor after the lanyard has been pulled.

Let us know what you have before I will elaborate more on this type of switch just in case you have something else.

If you don't have the Johnson model or configuration that Joe is talking about you might check all of the ground wires that are in the circuit; not just the ground to the switch. A bad ground could cause your switch to malfunction.

Yes it is the Johnson Ocean Runner 90, and yes it also has the key switch with the built in safety switch. That explains my problem exactly. When the kill switch key broke the motor shut off, but then just trying it with out the kill switch key it started, so that makes sense. I replace the kill switch key, reinstall and then test to make sure it kills the motor again. If not then there is a more serious issue.

Alright, now we are getting some place.

That key switch is designed to do 2 things.
1. Do kill the engine when the lanyard is pulled (the first time)
2. After the lanyard is pulled, the operator left in the boat can still start the engine to pick up the original operator that fell overboard with the lanyard attached.
The engine will be able to start from here on out without the lanyard. This is how the switch is designed.

To reset everything.
Turn the key off.
Put the lanyard back on.
And then if you pull the lanyard again, it will cut the engine but only the first time....
A nice safety feature so you don't have to instruct a person left on the boat and you don't have to have a separate, spare lanyard on board to be able to pick up the man over board.

I am getting to replace my original older style key switch and separate lanyard with this newer style.

This newer style switch does need a special lanyard which is designed for this particular switch and can be obtained from BRP...... (Bombardier dealer).....
