I have an opportunity to repower my 1963 Nauset with a 2000 Yamaha 100HP 4 stroke (carbed I assume). The price is decent. I was going to get a left over Merc 90HP 4 stroke (fuel injected).

Without trying to start a flood of people standing on their soap boxes, can anybody give any data on why one may be better than the other.

Is there anything overwhelmingly excellent about the Yamaha?

I know there were some carb issues with them getting clogged, but I would like to hear some more about them.

A friend has the Yamaha 100 on a non-whaler center console and did some experience some issues. Final diagnosis was bad gas, no filter and infrequent use.

Yes. I have an excellent merc repair shop nearby, but I'm not against a short travel if it is a smart move to get the yamaha.

Well I am a Yamaha fan... with that said I would look at the following issues.
1 - Cost - Dont know what you are looking at - you fill in advantage
2 - Weight - Yamaha 363 Pounds - Merc - Assume its a 2006 - 386 Pounds - Advantage Yamaha
3 - Age - Yamaha is 7 year old used motor - Merc is New leftover - Advantage Merc
4 - Fuel Delivery - Yamaha is Carb (assumption) - Merc is EFI - Advantage Merc
5 - Service - Sounds like you have a close by good Merc shop - Advantage Merc
6 - HP - Yamaha is 100 Merc is 90 - Not really sure which is a stronger motor - maybe someone can chime in on this one.
Not knowing the cost difference it would seem that the Merc would be the clear choice here.

Thanks. I should have made a list the same way. I think it will come down to the cost issue. I'm still waiting for the final price of the Yamaha as the dealer is doing some minor repairs and has not finalized the pricing. I think my oppinion is that if there is more than a $ 1500 price difference, I'll go with the Yamaha. I suspect there will be that, and then some. Interestingly, the Yamaha just came off an old Whaler and the dealer is familiar with the issues of bolting a modern engine on a old Whaler hull. He claims this engine mount is set up to bolt right up with no modifications to the hull. I'm curious about that and will be taking a look at the engine this weekend.

I was just saying yesterday to someone that this site seems to conduct itself with much more restraint. It is nice not having to weed through hateful and soapbox postings.

Any way David,

I can understand the dollar effect on the decision however, the EFI motor would be my choice regardless of brand.

I was reading your question about re-powering. I have a Johnson 4stroke with fuel injection. The thing idles so smooth it's scary. ChrisG

Your Johnson 4stroke should actually be a Suzuki with Johnson stickers on it.

Which David have you looked into Suzuki's? What about an E-Tec?

Heck you are very close to Ed's and they have a LOT of great prices.

90 hp Suzuki EFI 4S is $6000 with 6 year warranty

115hp Suzuki EFI 4S is $6500 with 6 year warranty

90hp Yamaha Carb'd 2S is $5100 with 3 year warranty

90hp Yamaha EFI 4S is $6200 with 6 year warranty

90hp E-Tec EFI 2S is $7300 with 3 year warranty

90hp Merc Carb'd 2S is $5500 with 3 year warranty

90hp Merc EFI 4S is $7200 with 3 yeat warranty

The Suzuki is a tough one to beat at $6000 and 6 YEAR warrranty

yea, that's what i thought... dont think you'd want to be putting a 115 on a montauk or sport. insurance is a good thing.

Many insurance companies will insure boats that have higher Hp motors than rated for. You just need to be up front when getting the policy. Of course you will be paying a higher premium.

Safeco is one of those companies. They are also one of the few that will insure a classic whaler for it's fair market value and not NADA values.

Ed's does have great advertised prices but once you add up all the extras, it's not so great. It really depends on where your doing your boating, you should get a relationship with a dealer that is close to the boat. Use Ed's for a price check but as long as you feel good about the deal, then it's good.
