I just saw a 2008 Montauk and really like the factory grab rail they added above the boarding platform. I ordered the part and was wondering what type of wood is in the gunnel above the boarding ladder.
Mounting it here seems to make more sense. Whenever I get in the boat from the water I always step up and grab the gunnel. My kids are young and are always reaching for another hold. I thought a grab rail on top of the gunnel would do the trick. I have looked at the wood diagram but can't really tell if there is any wood in the location on the gunnel above the boarding ladder.

Okay, here is attempt to assist.
In looking at the diagram, on both sides of the boat, there appears to be a piece labeled M p/s that wraps around the corner on the top of the gunnel. It does not appear that the piece extends in all the way toward the endcap of the rubrail. I recall reading an article of a kicker install to a 170 transom directly. There were pictures showing the notch cut out and there is no wood. Here is the
article with photos
Have you considered mounting it above the platform on the outside of the transom? There is backing material there. On the diagram it is labeled EE on one side and FF on the other. I am imagining a swimmer having their feet on the lowest step and wanting to reach over and grab something. I think the top of the gunnel may be too far?
Hope this helps.
