John Fry sent me these pictures. I told him I didn't think it was original BW. The top part of seat looks like the Nauset Bench Seat. The bottom looks homemade.
What do you think?

Your assesment is correct. It is not a Whaler seat, though the seat back and bench top *may* be from an original Nauset "church pew".

Newbie here. Thank you Zack for posting the pictures. I'm a one of a kind furniture maker and I'm helping a friend who owns a very old Whaler. He is looking for a complete rebuild.

On the pilot seat - I need to either build this seat or the build the RPS seat... I'm in discussions with the boat owner about what he wants.

The cool thing about this modified pilot w/pivot is that it houses the battery and tool box. They are strapped down with bands.

The bad thing about this seat however is
1) not OEM
2) when reversed - you sit on a 96qt Igloo.

I'm rebuilding the console based on the design in the downloads - but the design for the front seats are missing from the drawings - any pictures of an orginal design of the front console seat would be appreciated.

I think...
John Fry's wife should be concerned that he's keeping the boats' parts in the living room.....but parts is parts!
Part of that bench might be partly right, but there is a part of it, that was a fig newton of someone's imagination....
Just so happens, I've got the bench out of the Nauset...

Here's a 45 year old Nauset windshield...sans glass...begging for attention...
Please note the intricate joinery on all planes...I've seen 'em built out of a single piece of plywood...but that's not the way this one...or any of the one's I build, shall be done....
By the way...Bill Gathercole's replacement windshield gasket fits and looks perfect!
Best $40 bucks I've spent on a boat, in a long time!

Are you saying there is an issue with using that bench inside? I have an RPS that I plan on refinishing which will sit outside during the summer and inside in the living room during the winter?

Don't get me wrong!....
It's a beautiful piece of mahogany furniture!
I'd put one on my front porch if I could, but somebody would steal it....
But MY wife would get flustered, if it was in the living room...
She prefers sitting on it...on The Hudson!:D

Thanks for posting these pictures. I have downloaded a plan for the fixed bench seat from this web site and it does not have the dimensions of the frames at either end of the bench. can you help me with the dimensions? I can copy just about anything but need a place to start..
I need the angle of the back rest to the seat.
I need the dimensions of the bracket/frame.

Any help would be appreciated.. Tom

Guys -The seat is not in my living room. This is my basement right outside of my shop and next to the pool table. The seat right you see in the pictures is now in my shop.

Thanks for the original pictures. The owner of the boat does not want me to make him an original seat. There were several factors for him to consider. The most important one being: where would he put the battery if I made an original seat? Note that someone earlier in his boat's life cut a rectangular hole for two battery cables in the center of the floor that runs back to the motor. Battery and tool kit fit under the seat and are tied down with straps. He studied the RPS seat and decided against it since he likes his 96Qt. cooler w/cover behind the seat. There was no space to put RPS with 96Qt cooler. He looked hard at going with a RPS seat w/modified based to put in a 48Qt with compartment for battery and tool box.

His decision was to build a modified pivot seat almost identical to the one I have in the shop off the boat. There are two modifications: Instead of two 1" chrome bars: 1) The new seat will have two 1 1/4" mahogany seat supports that pivot on 1/2" stainless steel clevis pins with bronze bearings. 2) I will add a small lockable drawer under the seat that can be pushed forward when the battery or tool kit needs to be extracted. I will post pictures of finished pivot pilot seat.

For the front console seat, I built it based on pictures off this web site of other boats. However the console seat is going to sit on a piano hinge and have a lockable compartment underneath it. When this is done I will also post pictures.

Here is an original seat from a Sakonnet model and was an option for Nauset models.
This seat will allow you to put fuel tanks or battery and/or other storage items.

This Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS) is by far the most desirable seat for the Classics in many peoples opinion.

I personally prefer this seat over the fixed type.
