Hi,
I'm considering buying an 1988 Montauk 17 form TX if I can ship it to Vermont.

Anyone have experience or information about moving about around the country?

Thanks!

Tim

A good boat transport company will charge $1.40- $2.00 per mile.

You should put the boat on a flatbed or a low loader rather than have it towed.

Have the boat shrinkwrapped. Dont just cut it off, save it and use as a winter cover.

Have you seatrialed it? You really should.

Honestly, shipping is a big hassle and I would look in New England. Fall is a great time to buy.

I agree with the other Phil here. Can you find one locally? 17 Montauk is very popular. I just went to take out my 13 Whaler the other day, and a truck arrived with 3 brand new 170 MTKs. They are everywhere!

For comparison, I just bought a 25 footer in the Carolinas (no trailer) and had it shipped up to Boston. It was about 5K for the shipping. This is the first boat I ever bought where I didn't get to see it in person. I did a survey and sea trial but nothing beats being able to go over it yourself.

I just bought a 190 Montauk. I flew to Jupiter, FL to see it and sea trial it. I used UShip to find a shipper to deliver it to Western NC. I got quotes as low as $800 to as high as $3100. I chose a guy who lives near me for $1,047. I had concerns about axles and tires on the trailer and he said he could deal with any problems. He was great! the distance was 697 miles. Hope that helps.

For the math challenged, it was $1.50 per mile towed.
