Recently purchased a 1976 Outrage 21' to fix my kid's "I'm bored" problem. The boat is on a mooring and I want to empower them to take the boat out themselves (they have their boating licenses). The current outboard is a 1993 Yamaha 175HP yet I don't feel comfortable with them going at it alone with that motor which has had moments of inconsistency.

The boat will be used for cruising & fishing around the bay and potentially pulling a tube or a skier (when I'm driving). The last activity (tubing/skiing) is a nice to have not a need to have.

I'm looking for repowering suggestions or recommendations for this size whaler and if I should purchase new or used. Also ballpark all-in cost estimates would be helpful.

If the kids are teenagers I would only power the boat to run a max of 40mph.

As for engines, everyone makes a decent 150hp. Suzuki are a bit less, Honda the most expensive. Prices range from 16-18K for a full replacement (binnacle, cables, harnesses, gaugues, key switch, prop)

For tubing I would buy a 4 bladed prop you can swap out. Gives better acceleration/maintain speeds.

Changing boats is not necessarily the best option. Prices are still high and you don't know the engines history.
