I
finally found a super engine for my '70 Katama which is a '73 Johnson 65hp in unbelievable shape. I was looking for the discussion concerning engine height/placement where there were some pics of a Whaler (with a bottom job) that had a yardstick on top of the cavitation plate extending towards the transom to show proper placement...but I can not dig up that thread anywhere. Any help ? Thanks! Paul

The cavitation plate should be from level with the bottom, up to one inch higher. Start your testing at level, and try using shim sticks and go up in 1/4" increments,,or one hole on the bracket at a time. Don`t bother to do any testing with the plate lower than the bottom
check in calm and rougher water, with light and heavy loads.

An easy way to get proper height is to look at the postion of the cav plate at cruise . Ken at propgods.com shows it here:

Thanks for all the good info ! It looks like the threaded holes already in the transom match right up to the top holes on the '73 Johnson's engine bracket. I did not know they were threaded all the way through. I learn more each day. Are there any pitfalls in securing those to the engine (dab holes with 4200?; nickel plated steel bolts OK or only stainless)? I plan on using nylon locknuts. The bottom slots on the engine bracket are too low and would require a blind fastener and I want to stay away from that if I can. There are two single holes on the engine bracket a little below and to the inside of the 4 upper holes, but above the slots, that would allow a clear path through the transom to the inside of the splashwell where I could bolt all the way through. The washers inside the splashwell are high enough that they would lay flat. Are there any problems with drilling two new holes to accomodate these lower bolts that anyone can forsee or has experienced? Thanks for all your help. One step closer !! Paul
