Hello everyone, this is a great page you have here. My question here is about a kicker for my 1968 13’......Ive taken the boat in the bays of Southern Ca. Last time my motor died while on the way out of the Harbor. I used the trolling motor to get back. 1 mile. I was thinking of adding a 2.5hp as a kicker for when I’m inshore fishing.. My question is on the port side it’s a little higher than the middle. Should I go with a 15” or 20” shaft. Also I was told the long shaft would drag if I left it tilted and I was running the boat on plane....also would it be ok keeping the kicker in the down position while running the main. Thank you.

Our 150 Montauk runs a short shaft. Measure the distance from the mounting point to the bottom of the hull to determine your needs. The prop just needs to be below the bottom, not necessarily the AV plate, since the boat will not plane with the kicker.

If tilted up, the kicker may drag slightly when the boat is at very slow speed, but it won't hit the water when on plane.

NEVER run a kicker in the down position when running the main.

Awesome,

That is exactly the answer I needed. The short shaft does sit just below the bottom of the boat. Thank you so much for your reply.
