I can"t seem to be able to add an avatar, photo is of proper size, I click browse it seems to upload then it disappears after I click on update profile ?

Once you upload it, are you inserting it into your signature?

Download one of the standard Avatars and then try uploading it.
If the standard one works, then you know something is wrong with the size or type of photo that you are trying to upload.
