Hey Everyone

This is my first post on this forum. I just had the great fortune to be gifted a Boston Whaler, and I've wanted one for years. It is a 1973 Sport 13, and it has an ancient engine that I need to replace. Any suggestions on what to get? I need it to be a 4 cylinder with electric start, under 25 HP for trolling and not too heavy for the boat.

Here are some pics. Thanks!

That is a 1971 or older. It has the old bulkhead transom and a 15" shaft. Looks to be all original so that is good and it is probably a dry hull. If you want PTnT you will most likely have to go with a 20" shaft engine and make or buy a setback bracket to raise it. 30hp or less 4 stroke willl not be too heavy, the 40's are much heavier. PTnT adds weight as well but marginal for the performance, ease of use, and resale. Manual start motors(pull start) will be a harder sell down the road. Everyone want electric. I would also use a 275CCA lawn mower battery to cut weight. Mine works great on a EFI 40hp.

As biggie mentions, it is 1971 or earlier

and it is not a Sport model, but rather a Standard model with tiller and not remote steering.
The MAX HP for a Standard model is 20HP.

See our article section on Current Motors for a 13' but again, watch the weight.
