I’m thinking about buying a used Yamaha 50 hp four stroke for my boat and was hoping to get recommendations/guidance on pitch for propeller. Also would love to hear any other input. Boat will be used on fresh water lake mostly for cruising with kids but some fishing. Thanks!

Tom -
We need to know the model and year of the engine to determine the gear ratio.

For future reference there is a significant difference between the F50 and the high thrust version, T-50.
While I don't have any tested recommendations on my prop sheet, a scan of all the threads shows this post. While it is a different hull, it is a good place to start.

The high thrust version should be a good match as I like the larger gear case and prop diameter. You will just need to run a larger pitch than a small gear case 50. Suzuki has lower gear ratios in most of their engines and they work better in my opinion, especially for holeshot. it is just weird running a 20" pitch prop on a 70hp on a Montauk which should be a 17" on a common gear case. What is the engine coming off of and what prop does it have? Tach? If off a similar sized boat I would try it and see what your numbers are. If it is coming off a pontoon, do not bother with it.
