Hi All,
In process of total rebuild on 1986 OUTRAGE 18. Am in process of selecting new motor. I have read lots of thread re: what size motor. I am pretty much decided on the 2020 Evinrude G2 115HO.Dealer says it should push me about 42-43mph... As the 2020 deals haven't been announced yet, I was poking around and found that there are rebates on the G2 150HO.
I keep going back and forth on what size motor... Even sneaking a few peaks at the Suzuki 140... I have 70HP Suzuki on my 1973 BW Sakonette and it has been flawless.
Although top end is not most important to me, it's always fun... From experience, I also know that more HP "can" be more efficient, as it doesn't have to work as hard...
What are your thoughts.... (and I repeat, I have "used the search function") . There isn't much info on the G2 on an Outrage 18.

It's also not out of the question to look for a Evinrude 135HO G1, especially for a deal.

I had a 150 Yamaha 2S on my 18' Outrage. I thought it was perfect.

I have a 115 on my 1986 18' Outrage and 43mph is not going to happen. It does 40 with half fuel and 2 people mounted all the way up. I am going to repower with a 200 or 225 4 stroke. I would consider the 135-140 if speed is not important. I think most are getting mid 40's from the 140 and around 50 with a 150hp. I am looking for high 50's+

Bob -
General questions:
- Remind me where you are running. Sebago? Casco Bay?
- Do you run light or heavy most of the time?
-Tubing? Ski?
- Do you rack up a lot of miles on your runs? Typical desired running speed?
I have a Outrage 22 WD friend in Scarborough who repowered with a G2 and
really likes it.
In considering a E-TEC 115HO I recall its WOT hp is like 123.

Hi Phil,
My slip is at Fore Points Marina in Portland. My time is spent on Casco Bay. Portland, So. Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Pine Point, Cousins Island, Yarmouth, Cumberland, Freeport... Where ever I can find the Stripers with plugs and flies.
Sebago, Maybe 1ce a year.

I just looked at the Evinrude G2 site. The 3 cyl G2's are 115HO, 140 and 150. The 150 G2 is a V6.. Too heavy about 105 pounds more. Too bad the 150G2- V6 has a $2000 rebate going on.
If the 115HO put's out 10% more HP, that makes it 126.5HP. 140G2 non-ho is 140HP , that's only 13.5HP difference.....
Can't see a real benefit unless the HP curve is different.
If 115G2 HO is 126.5HP and a 150G2 is 150 HP then it's 23.5HP more.
All else being equal sounds like it comes down to dollars.
Wondering what the price difference would be for that 23.5HP.
You just saw an example of how my mind works... hehe
Does it make sense?

Get a 150, it will be a whole lot easier to sell if you ever decide to. A 115 is just the wrong choice, given the options out there today.

Compare the weight and displacement of the E-TEC 140 to:
Yamaha F150
Mercury 150 Fourstoke
Suzuki DF140
It may not sound logical but the E-TEC 140 might be the best fit.

Chatted with my dealer at lunchtime.
The G2 140HP will cost $900 more than the G2 - 115 HO.
The G2 3 cyl. 150HP will cost $1900 more than the G2 115HO
G2 140HP May be the winner here...

I have heard the HO's make more HP but I don't think I have ever seen a dyno. I thought the main difference was the gear case and possible different mapping of the CPU. All outboards have a 10% wiggle room to comply with ratings so a 200hp can be 180-220hp and still be called a 200. I doubt many try and achieve 220hp because if they exceed it, it is no longer a 200hp.
My point is they might be more like 120hp as they are not going to be 126.5.
Another point is the engine in general. A older 3cyl 90hp Merc or Yamaha 2 stroke will get its but kicked on both holeshot and top speed by the old OMC 90hp 4cyl. A 140 E-tec might beat a 140 Suzuki or it may not.

I follow the E-tec series of engines. Especially models before the "G" series. Bombardier has an interesting and confusing method of horse power with identical blocks. Then throw HO into the equation to really make you scratch your head. My personal take is a preference for the block that has the not "hot rodded" hp rating. I empathize with the "tweener" position you are in. If the G2 3 cylinders are the same block 140hp, 115HO, and the 150hp.......... the 140hp would be my choice.
I talked with Bombardier a few years ago when I had a chance at the 250hp Etec and saw it had the same block for lower Hp ratings. My 1979 22' Revenge is rated at 240 Hp and I asked if I could get a program to have the hp lowered (I wanted my boat to follow factory original specs). No can do. They laughed because the calls were usually to increase the Hp output.

(This is meant to be helpful, not judging.)
Are those just engine prices, tax included or not? Which E-TEC 140hp model engine? Does it have the integrated hydraulic steering?
When it comes to pricing on a repower. Be careful. Many dealers are of the used car salesmen mentality.
Repower will be $12,990. No detail, no part #, no scope of work, no explanation.
It makes it impossible for you to comparison shop. Would you buy a car on just a single #, no listing of options, fees, charges etc?
With all the new networking, computerization, the rigging details are much more complicated...and expensive.
What is being priced?
Which binnacle, Icon II Premium, Icon II EST or System Check w/key or without? How much?
What throttle/shift cables or electronic?
Which gauges, or displays, what price is each one?
What engine panel colors? Price?
Network backbone parts and prices?
Cost to remove old?
Cost to install new?
Prop make/model/part #.
Sea trial included?
I am re powering and my dealer is giving me the price for each and every item I select.
You have several authorized E-TEC dealers in the area to choose from.
The researching phase can help you figure which dealer is worth working with.
Hope this helps.

I am very pleased with the standard ETEC 150 on my Outrage 18. Tons of power even fully loaded and runs very economically especially at
cruising speeds. I'd think twice on a 115 even with the G2 as any re-power is a big investment.

The only difference between the 3 motors is their state of tune, (HP) and potentially, prop size. For pricing, all needed items, cables, control box, gauges, hoses, cables, rigging, de-rigging, etc., are all the same.
In short, I used the 115 G2 HO as the baseline to identify the increase in cost for the 140G2 and 150G2.
Two local dealers were within $100.00 of each other. One has been servicing my boats for 20 plus years. I'm going with him.
Thanks for all of the input.
