I'm going to repower my Outrage 22' and have been checking different sites to see what's available but haven't come across much yet. I have plenty of time but figured I'd ask to see if anyone has any sites they like in particular. I'd like to get a 2002 or newer Evinrude DI engine, 200 or 225 HP, but would also consider a Yamaha of the same HP. Scream and Fly seems to be mostly Mercury, though their previous posts do have some Evinrudes, and I've been keeping an eye on EBay, Craig's, etc. Figured if I could get some decent sites lined up, I'll keep an eye on them over the next few mo's and see what turns up. Dave, be careful with Scream &Fly - as a friend told me, used motors there have been generally used pretty hard.

I would keep an eye on local dealers, papers, craigslist and ebay. Try to find something local so you can check it our yourself to make sure its as advertised. I had placed a Want to buy ad on my local craigslist and did get a few prospects that were not listed there for sale. Might be another way to go.

I haven't picked up anything like that on ebay...I'm sure you can get a decent buy from ebay, but buyer beware...one thing I'd do is talk with some dealers that you have a relationship with...expecially ones that are brand specific...(depending upon your biases)...tell them what you're looking for, hp, year, hours, brand, etc...and let them search for you...they'll be getting people who are looking to repower (for whatever reason, and now is the time for that) and it might be deal maker for them...if they only deal with one brand...ie: Merc...and someone wants to trade a Johnson...if they know you are going to pick up that johnson, everyone will be happy...I've talked with my local boat dealer about this but it just doesn't fit in the budget, (yet!)

If you are anyone is looking at a company in Pa that claims they rebuild motors and give a 1 year warranty, stay away from them and PM me for full details of their ethics. Stay away........stay far far away

I recently saw a Merc 250 that was totally rebuilt by a reputable mechanic down here in Annapolis. Not sure what he wants for it? Appeared to be in excellent condition, no corrosion. It has a Cosworth block and awesome stainless prop. I believe it comes with everything for installation. If your interested, Its located at Boat works. Call Tim Whitney #410-268-6627.

This engine was on E-bay and is exactly what I'm looking for, but the guy selling it was 1200 mi away, had never run it, and was selling it w/o any warranty. Didn't want to risk it, but it was very tempting as it sold for a great price I think?

There was a large sale with in the last couple months of used motors on GSA in Florida. There were a lot of beat on 225 Evinrude DI motors that were up for auction. I am not saying this motor is from that auction but you never know after a little clean up and paint. I would have a tough time forking over money to someone on ebay or just anyone off the internet for a used motor. I would buy a used motor from someone I knew on a board, from a recommended mechanic, or a local friend.

Dave, I recently purchased my new 87 center console 22 outrage and with it came a 2006 E-Tec. According to the computer, my warranty runs out Dec 08, so just for curiosity, I talked to my local dealer about my options. My choices were purchase an extended warranty for about 1500 bucks, or upgrade to a new motor. Apparently if you catch them during the boat shows, a lot of times you can come away with a 7 year warranty.

The bad news was, don’t expect much for your trade-in. They are there to sell new motors, so their position was, trade-in low, and sell low just to move it fast. So, the good news is, if you find a dealer that’s willing to work with you, and your patient, you just might find exactly what your looking for when someone is ready to put on a new motor.

I ran into a guy with a brand new E-Tec this year when I was out. I asked him how he liked his new motor and he said great, that’s why he gets a new one every year! :o Bottom line, they are out there. B)

I agree Jeff, and as tempting as those prices are, if I can't do an ocean trial, a trusted source is the next best thing. Thanks for the tip on the GSA, very good point. If I can't find anything locally, I'm going to give Dave at Lockeman's a call (I came across their site a few weeks ago while searching around I think). Duff, my local dealer isn't so great so I have an inquiry in to one that's about 35 miles north of here, hopefully they have the same attitude as the guys by you. But everyone here seems to have profit maximization at the top of their priority listm even with used engines, based on what I've seen so far. And I've seen ARG on EBay, they certainly seem to have enough engines for sale. But even with a guarantee, there's still shipping costs and time lost if there ends up being a problem. It's a tough call...

I would steer clear of Ebay or any other auction when it comes to outboard motors. There were alot of motors damaged and submerged in the Hurricanes last year. Too much risk for me.

My buddy ordered a rebuilt powerhead from a company-advertising on Ebay-down in florida. Well, they sent him the wrong powerhead and won't answer there phone now. He isn't even sure it was rebuilt...:( He went ahead and rebuilt his motor himself but he is still stuck with this one and he lost $2200.

My point, exactly...if you give a dealer your specifications...during the offseason when people are looking to repower...you could get a good deal with a used outboard. They know if they have a buyer for a trade in, they can make a sale when before they couldn't...you'd also save money on rigging since, most likely, you'll be "upgrading with an engine that will work with your controls...

I've e-mailed two companies that have motors on E-bay asking about the specifics of their guarantees and haven't heard back from either. And I know first hand that the E-bay buyer protection policy is a joke, so I'm going to take your advice Mike and skip them all together. Still waiting to hear back from that semi-local dealer, hopefully that'll be productive. Appreciate all the suggestions!

There is a place in Niantic Connecticut called outboard exchange that I have heard good things about. The site is http://www.outboardexchange.com/. Not sure what they would have for larger engines but it might be worth a call. They also do rebuilds.
