I own a 13' 1997 Whaler with a 25HP engine. This is our first season with it, and as we live in New Hampshire, need to winterize it before covering it for the winter. Can anyone give me, or direct me to, a summary of how to winterize it? Thank you very much in advance from a new Whaler owner....

If you do a web search on your engine type you will find a plethora of information on how to winterize your engine. Good luck and stay warm.

Given its your first year

1. Change lower unit oil
2. Replace the water pump impeller (every 3-4 yrs after)
2. Spray fogging oil in cylinders (fog the engine)
3. Drain fuel tank and carbs (use in your blower)
4. Replace spark plugs and thermostat (every 3-4 yrs after)
5. Lubricate
- tilt tube
- engine pivot
- engine cover latches

6. Lube the trailer (wheel bearings, coupler)
7. Jack/block the trailer so the wheels are off the ground.
8. Make a large sawhorse and use a large tarp. See photo on the bottom of my personal page for ideas.

9. Wash the boat
10. Clean and remove all the PDF's, tools, flares, cushions, canvas and store inside.

With a 25 you can just remove the engine and stick it in your basement. Good advice from Phil if nothing that you know has been done to it recently. You can buy a custom cover as well.

If you're storing outside.....make sure the engine is down so any water can drain away from the prop area. I've seen lower gear cases crack from water freezing in them, on engines that are stored in the up position.
