Been wanting to repower for a while and getting some encouragement from the wife. But getting some sticker shock. I'm sure I'm not alone. Seems like prices are high in the area I live in. I
Have checked prices in 200 mile radius of me and seem to get higher.
Been looking at 70 Yamaha and Etec 90. Both seem to come out to about 11k mounted and completed. Is this in line? Seems high to me.

I'm in the SF area, and yes it is a challenge to find reasonable pricing.

My last experience buying new I was quoted 12.5K and by the time all the 'incidental' work was added I was over 15K.

Mercury was running attractive rebates earlier this spring. If your budget is tight and you’re not in a hurry, it may be worth your while to wait and watch for the rebates to return.

Also, consider ordering a Merc 90 Fourstroke from Jacos Marine. They will ship directly to you (shipping is roughly the same cost as the sales tax savings.) Right now Jacos advertises the 90 @ $7,665 (without rebate.) Mercury allows DIY installation, for additional cost savings.

Interesting points JRP. I'm not in a hurry as my current Merc is working and we are all catching fish. I will Watch for Mercury rebates/promos. I have seen the ETEC extended warranty in the past and figured if I buy one I'd time it right for that.
Your idea of mounting a Merc myself is something I didn't think of. But we did mount a new 40 Johnson on my old 13 Whaler. It was easy but of course a smaller boat and motor to deal with.

Well doing my home work here and checking prices with in a reasonable distance from home. Learning a few things. Prices vary widely.

Etec 90 seems to be on the high end price wise. 9400$ just for the engine, that is the best price so far on Etec.

Mercury 90 8166$ at Bass pro shop. Other mercury dealers are higher. This is about an 11/ 2 hour drive for me. Not perfect but an area I pass thru routinely so taking boat there not a big deal.

Yamaha 70 7795$. Other dealers closer to me much higher priced. I like this dealer and met him in the past but he is farther away from me and that will make follow up visits hard.

Susuki is not an option, no dealer at all around here.

I'm interested in the TLDI 90. Couple dealers reasonably close. Still working on prices.

The challenge is not necessary the engine pricing. Easy to get prices for those.

What is a significant expense and has many variables is derig and installation.

Price out labor rate for:

- Remove engine
- Derig cables and electrical.
- Fiberlass/gelcoat repairs to transom/console
- Install new engine
- Reusing existing rigging or install all new?
- Reuse steering or upgrade to hydraulic (+1K)
- Water tests and prop changes

Binnacles, network harnesses and gauge prices have ballooned with the change to networking, hubs, LCD flat screens etc. (this means repairs to console, instrument blanks etc)

Are you moving a battery forward for weight balance? This means more electrical work. Set of battery cables to console can be $100.

Props are not cheap, easily $4-600.

All of the above does not change if you are buying a 70, 90 or 115.

I have some of those costs, not all. The Yamaha dealer was the most upfront and straight forward about that. Haven't sat down and covered it all. Will
Meet with the Merc dealer in a couple weeks, have him check my boat and get more detailed info. As of now just trying to get a better idea of the engine prices and compare.

I moved my batteries to the CC years ago. My cables should work.
My original steering was long gone. I installed a standard Tele Flex steering system that goes through the tilt tube on my computer old Merc, I assume that should work?

1974 Montauk. Sorry didn't put that info up. I have an 1988 80 hp mercury and and 4.5 hp kicker. Both work surprisingly well . I troll a lot. Want new motor for use at Tahoe. Also I want a new engine, for what that is worth.

Hard to pin down the the costs for the controls, mounting etc.
Ironically the only dealer who
Wanted to talk in depth about this had the engine itself priced so high it wasn't worth getting an itemized list.
Talked with a lady at Jacobs . She claimed an engine has to be sent to a Mercury dealer. I wasn't dying to tackle an install myself as I no longer have use of a Crain. I also heard the TLDI will be discontinued. That is a turn off even though they seem like a good value. This is not substantiated.
Still a toss up between the F70
And Mercury 90 I mentioned above. I think my existing controls will
Work with an adapter so that will save some cost if I go with the Mercury.
I will wait and see what promotions come out in the fall. I will be hunting and not need the use of the boat.

More background.

Manufacturer's require the engine dealer "activate" the warranty.

80% of dealers will not inspect/activate an installation that they didn't do themselves.

Jacos ships to dealers for this reason.

Ed's Marine Superstore does not have this requirement I think. You do need to find a local dealer who will verify the install is correct and activate the warranty. Their current price on a Mercury 90 FourStroke is $8100.00.

The promotions that I see are more occasionally an "allowance on rigging/gauges and extending warranty with a 3rd party offering.
