I currently own a 1984 Montauk with 2002 Mercury 90 2 stroke (less than 50 hours run-time). My question is for anyone that has run both types of OB, 2 and 4 stroke of the same make and model be it a Yamaha, Mercury, Johnson etc. Are the 4 strokes that much quieter than the 2 strokes at idle and at speed? Is takeoff from dead still (hole shot), very noticeable? I think my main point of interest is the amount or reduction of noise. Any information that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am really trying to ascertain if the replacement of my 2 stroke with a 4 stroke is worth the expense.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Four strokes are wisper quiet.
Hole shot is decent, a small bit slower off the line but it really doesn't matter..
As for expense, it will be a ~ $8500-9500 decision. Personally, it is not a wise decision if the Mercury is not close to death or -
- You live on your boat running 150+ hrs a season. Average boater spends <50 hrs/season.
- Take long high speed runs (fuel burn and droning sounds)
- Have small kids and sensitive to exhaust.

Weight. 2-strokes are a fraction of the weight of a 4-stroke. less weight on boat=greater speed & capacity.
2-strokes have more hp & performance per displacement via torque at higher rpms. 2x's power of a 4-stroke.
2-strokes don't lose power due valves' operation. Cams are different.
downside to 2-strokes: gotta mix oil/gas fuel. greater fuel consumption. NOISE.

Thanks to each and everyone for their help on my OB questions. With my Mercury 90hp and less than 50 hours on it, it makes it hard to purchase a 4 stroke. Outside of the noise factor it appears I should probably stay with the Mercury. Hopefully I can get an opportunity to ride in a boat with a 4 stroke this summer. Thanks again fellas, very much appreciated.
