Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Worthwhile to rebuild 150 hp 2 stroke Yamaha???

I'm thinking of buying a Whaler with a 150 hp 2 stroke Yamaha. The compression is 95 psi per cylinder. It is approx 1992 vintage.
I'm told by some that rebuilding an outboard is a waste of money, buy new instead.
There is no hour meter on this motor. I was considering replacing the piston rings only, if a squirt of oil into the cylinder bumps up the compression.
What do you think? All opinions greatly appreciated.
Anyone had experience rebuilding a 150 hp Yamaha?
Thanks in advance.

I don't think it is-For what it would cost, you could buy a very good used motor for no more money-

I agree with Walter. You should be able to find a good deal on a used engine.
As I mentioned in your other thread, I own that identical engine, same year. Mine is in outstanding mechanical and cosmetic condition, with good compression all around. But I did need to replace the shift shaft and you will too if the one you are considering purchasing has not been changed.
If you end up purchasing that boat and decide the engine isn’t worth rebuilding, drop ne a note as I may consider selling mine - - I have been wanting to upgrade to a Merc 150 Fourstroke.
Also, you have been calling this boat an Outrgae 18, but they weren’t made in 1992. What model year is this boat?

Hi JRP
It looks like a 1992 19 Outrage II although it is listed as an 18 ft.. It has the notched transom for a single outboard.
I appreciate your offer but I can pick up a used 4 stroke locally. The fishing camps up the coast
replace their ootboards every 2 years and they sell at about 1/2 new price. I live on the west coast of Canada.

You’ll like the 19 Outrage II - - it is the same external hull as the Outrage 18, with a different and in my opinion significantly improved interior. You are fortunate to have those newer-used engine options available deeply discounted from the camps. I would jump on that.
Keep in mind that weight is a factor when choosing an engine on these boats. There aren’t too many fourstrokes that I would consider good candidates. The Merc 150 and Suzuki 140 are about the only two.

Avoid the Suzuki 140. It is a wonderful running engine, but it is more of a 125 than a 140. That is a heavy boat and it needs a true 150 hp engine.
