Long time whaler owner recently downsized and picked up a old 1966 13ft that has a tired 25 yamaha.
Intend to repower with a 30-40HP trim and tilt so I can get in and out of shallow stuff.
I am not really up to speed on current power options. 2cycle , 4 cycle ?and wondered what other folks who have recently repowered have chosen and how things worked out?

Since your boat requires a 15" short shaft engine, and you asked about 40HP engines, I recommend you look at Mercury 4-strokes.
They make a 15" EFI 40HP 4-stroke, remote steering and power trim, that only weighs 204#. Evinrude does not make a 15" 40HP engine.

I upgraded from a 1999 30hp tohatsu 2stroke to a 2017 Mercury 4 stroke last year on a 1971 13’ sport. The back does sit slightly lower with the additional weight. To compensate, the battery was moved to middle of boat just behind first seat. My boat was modified with a stainless steel bracket to accommodate a 20” shaft. Top speed with two people is 35 mph. 30mph with 30hp. I really like the engine. However the 30hp would have been sufficient and probably a better choice. See pic.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I would like the power of the 40 (want more than really need) but due to the 15" transom will likely just go for one of the 30s just to keep the weight and balance reasonable.

Now I’m nervous. I’ve got a 1964 13’ and I found a 2007 Johnson 15” 50hp I’m going to hang tomorrow. I came here for an idea on where to drill the new holes and how high to hang it. Hope it’s not too much.

E-TEC 30hp available with 15 and 20 inch shaft and weighs 150 pounds. 40hp has 20 inch shaft only and weighs 232-250 pounds depending on exact model. Love my E-TEC.

Check out the Suzuki DF30AT- 15" shaft, power tilt, electric start, remote control - 159 lbs. Porta-bote sells a complete package including delivery, prop, fuel tank, controls, etc. I had one on a 2002 13 ft 130 Sport and it was a great engine
