By using the search function on this site, I found a great post that showed the standard lengths of most items that are in the "tunnel." I'm installing a Yamaha F70 on my 1978 Montauk 17 and want to know how long the control cables should be. The aforementioned post said " sump, straight, engine: 15 feet." Does anyone have any actual experience with the Yamaha and a 704 binnacle control on this hull that can guide me? Is 15 feet right? Thank you so much!

In my 1979 Montauk. basically the same boat and console as yours, I used 18' control cables. This way you can route all of the rigging bundled up with the steering cable for a neat installation, while keeping the boat splashwell relatively uncluttered. I would not recommend the 15' length where cables are run directly out of the sump up to the engine and across the splashwell. Does not look good at all.

Thanks, guys. I left out one important detail...I'm also converting the steering to hydraulic while I'm doing a refit.. So following the steering cable isn't as big an issue. The hydraulic tubes are led to one side, but they can make a sharper bend than cable steering. Reaction?

I used Baystar hydraulic on mine also, but substituted their higher grade HOSES for the plastic TUBES which I didn't like. The hydraulic hoses are also 18'.

Since on boats of this generation the stern light is on port, I ran all rigging to port, which keeps everything in one bundle, including the wiring, and leaves the starboard stern totally open. I would consider rigging this way. The photo shows all. See the entire Montauk album.

You are a "brother from another mother." Running everything on the stern light side is exactly what I had planned to do. I'll go find your photos. So you are saying, go 18 feet on everything, right?

Here is a photo of 20' cables as instructed in the OMC guide for a loop at the motor.

If the entry for the cables on your Yamaha is on the same side as the OMC in the photo, then that is really the best way to go as it keeps the cable low and out of the way.

Joe, off topic a bit but is that your Whaler in the pic? Cherry condition.
