Hello there, could anyone recommend on engine height for a 1988 Outrage 22 with a new 2017 Yamaha 225 please?
Also, the 225 is about to be ordered, but having last minute doubts as to 200 or 225 due to weight. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I will let others comment on mounting height (but usually classic Whalers mount the engines relatively high, i.e. at second highest bolt hole setting.)

Regarding weight, can you clarify which 200 HP Yamaha you are comparing? Yamaha offers both a 4-cylinder and a V6 200. The V6 200 is actually heavier than the larger 225 V6 Yamaha. So if it’s between the V6 options, you save weight on the transom by going with the 225.

Without knowing what prop you are selecting (some like to be buried, others near the surface) I would start at 2 holes up and then test.

As for engine differences,

F200 based on the 2.8L I4 block, weight is 220 kg (487 lbs)
F200 based on the 3.3L V6 block, weight is 276 kg (608 lb)
F225 based on the 4.2L V6 block. weight is 250 kg (551 lbs)

FYI, Yamaha has a very handy tool for comparing these engines here: https://yamahaoutboards.com/en-us/uti...comparison

The comparison tool makes it easier to more clearly see the differences between these engine models. Besides weight, there are differences in alternator output, gearbox ratios, gas octane requirement, etc.

Thanks guys, dunno about the prop yet (don't understand much but would like something not too specific, going out with the family, appreciate some high speed and thrust for water skiing.
Re engine I was looking at the comparison between 200 4 cylinders and the 225 v6. Just concerned about loading too much the transom and getting poor performance.

If your concern is about too much weight on the transom, you should really be looking hard at the Mercury 225 HP Fourstroke. It is a 3.4L V6 and weighs less than Yamaha’s 200 HP I4 engine.

And if you want to slap some serious power on the transom, the Merc 225 ProXS Fourstroke is a 4.6L V8 and only weighs 505 lbs.
