My son is about to get a 17 ft 1987 Newport. I have looked at several trailer posts and am familiar somewhat with the trailer setup thanks to many here who have posted. My problem is that when looking at trailers (I told him I'd buy the trailer) The measurement of "width between fenders" for a trailer I'm considering is listed as 72". I do not have the boat in my possession at this time so I cannot make that measurement. The specs on the Boston whaler site list the beam as 82". So my question is, does the boat taper as you move down from the rail to the bottom of the boat, in that case will the 72' due or or do I need a full 82" between fenders?
Thanks
Paul

You have a choice, have the boat sit above the wheels or down in between.

I, personally, prefer the boat sit low since it makes it easier to launch. Need less tongue length. I trailer 100% of the time to different ramps.

What brand/model are you looking at?

I'm looking at the Venture Trailers VAB-2025 fitting 16-17' boats, 2025 lbs capacity with an Over all width of 93", 76" between fenders. It's an aluminum trailer. It will not be used too much as the boat will be on the mooring most of the time.
