Hi there,

We just bought a 17 Outrage I late this summer, hull A90040. We bought her without the original 75 Merc and installed our Yamaha F60 EFI which was bought new in 2006.

We found that this powerplant is doing what we would expect, but it is too slow with getting on plane with 4 people on board.

We are thinking of upgrading to either a Yamaha F100 or the F 115.

I would appericiate it a lot if I could get some experiance of members having this setup on their 17 Outrage I.

What propeller is used, pitch, Alu or SS?
Is the weight a problem or not at all?
What is the full consumption and is build inn tank sufficient for a day´s crusing?
What is the max speed ?

I hope any one can share their experiance with me.

I wouldn't put less than a 90 hp on it. Just my opinion. My philoshophy is "Better to have and not need, than to need and not have". Go with a 115 and in the long run you will be happy.

Joe is correct on my boat.

While I love my boat, it is sensitive to weight in the stern. The Yamaha F115 is 405 lbs without fluids/prop. My boat does sit low. The splashwell drains are under the water about 1 or 2 inches. The outer transom drains are right at the water line. Most times I am in the water, conditions are crummy and I can ship alot of water at rest or backing down.

I have met 3 or 4 Outrage I owners and talked to 5 or 6 others about their set-ups. If it were me replacing my motor, I would go for an E-TEC 115 in a second. While I am a fan of Yamaha, the weight is too much.

If budget is an issue, I would not go under 90 hp. The boat will not perform and if you sell it down the road, it will scare off buyers. I think a 90 is good but a 115 will be the best.

What are your thoughts?

I have had a chat with my Yamaha dealer and he offered me a used F115 from 2004 with 84 hours of use, the Yammy he offered is only fresh water used and no scratch at all.

I do not have to pay a lot extra and I think I can make a super deal ($1750)

What do you think, take it or not?

Still the performance and weight questions are causing my doubt.....

What propeller is used, pitch, Alu or SS? Aluminum prop. Think it is the standard Yamaha 17 inch
Is the weight a problem or not at all? see above
What is the full consumption and is build inn tank sufficient for a day´s crusing? I just did 89 miles in a day and only used 16 gallons (1/2 tank.) The tank is more than adequate.
What is the max speed ? While the engine is a bit too low, it does 42-45 mph with a full tank, 75 lbs of gear and one person.

I guess we were writing at the same time. Regarding your comments, is the water not coming over the splashwell?

If the water only sits there, a small modification with scuppervalves with balls inside might do the trick.

Regardless of this, are you happy with the engine or is the boat going to purpoise due to stern being too haevy?

(EDIT) I just noticed you have a 1990 produced boat which has a totally different stern insert than mine. The water issues I have are not relevant to you since your splashwell is very different. I have stern seats where you have a molded deck with a hatch. Your gas tank is under the stern insert and mine runs under the floor up to the console.

To answer your questions:

The boat handles like a dream with this motor. It only porpoises if I have it trimmed out too far.

The motor itself is excellent. The prior owner re-powered and then traded it in for a Sea Cat. I bought the boat with 13 hours on the engine (put on by the dealer who loved the boat)

I now have 104 hours over 3 years. Easy to service, change oil etc. It is very quiet compared to the 90 hp Yamaha 2 stroke I had on a Montauk. It does not use a lot of gas. Not a single problem to date.

Moving gear from the stern seats, livewell more forward (console or front cooler) helped me a lot. I plan to move my battery from the stern seat to the console to get a little more weight forward.

While I don't know what a new one costs for you, a 2004 with low hours for that sounds great to me. Think these would run $3-4,000 USD here.

I have a Boston Whaler Outrage 17 1996 model
I bougth it with a 2 stroke Yamaha 115cv which was far too powerful and with a low autonomy

This summer i decided to buy the yamaha F100 Efi 4 stroke which is incredible
it has a strong accelleration and it is very very quiet.

Max Speed 38 Miles an hour! with 3 peole on board - GPS 34 Knots
Autonomy i don't know but i can tell you that on average the engine gets 3.3 - 3.5 gal per hour

The F115 according to the dealer is far too heavy

Welcome to WhalerCentral.

I am curious about your boat. The 1996 model is different than the 1990-1995 models.
See the specifications for each model below.

The 1990 to 1995 model has a max hp rating of 115...
1190-1995 Outrage 17' I

The 1996 to 1999 model has a max hp rating of 150...
1996-1999 Outrage 17' II

The 2 models above have entirely different hulls.
If you have a 1996 model that looks like the earlier version, I would sure like to see photos and the HIN number.
Every once and awhile a model sneaks through the system and is uncataloged for a particular year.

Thanks for your kind email. I also considered a new F 100 4 stroke, but I made a deal yesterday afternoon with my dealer on a used F115 4 stroke.

My Yamaha F 60 was build 2005 and had 151 hours of use on it. For 1750 Euro I now have bought a 2004 F115 4stroke with just 84 hours of use, on fresh water.

I am still a bit conserned on the weigt, 194 KG, and will moove the battery to the console. I will mount scuppervalves on the splashwell if this becomes a problem.

The fuel consumption you mention is good, that does sound very promising.

What about the weight of the motor, does the boat purpoise (bow going up and down all the time when planing)?

Where about are you in Italy? I live in Holland and will come to Italy on Holiday next summer and I will be taking the boat. We have not decided yet, but probably we will go to Lago Como or Lago Majore. Any reccomandations you can give?

We will come with some members of the whalerclubeurope and want to stay on a camping in a trailer or chalet.

Tomorrow I will install the F115 and will test with it over the weekend.

With all due respect to Andrea, I am very confident his model Outrage is a II. This model has a completely different hull. The hull weighs 500 lbs more. The minimum/max horsepower is also higher.

I only offer this to support your choice of power. I am confident you will be pleased and the boat will perform well.

Thanks Islander, I think you are right.

I know the 17/II is a complete different hull. In our whalerclub we have a couple of those and they are more heavey. That is one of the reasons why I have bought the classic 17 /1 . I have had many Whalers already, but for me the Classics are the nicest from design point of view. (I never should have sold my 1988 20 Outrage).

The 17 I is a boat that can handle rough water and is easey to trailer, one of the facts that I bought it for. We had a Guardian 17 (Montauk Model) but that is good for a flat sea or a lake, not rough water, than it becomes a bit uncomfortable, but that is just my opinion.

I am very interested how the 17 will perform this weekend, I will try several props, among those also the original Yamaha Performance Prop which is coming with the F115.

I will keep you all posted and put some new pictures on my profile.
