I have a 1977 Montauk 17 that I purchased in 2016. The hull ID on the stern is a metal plate with a number beginning with MZSM. I purchased the boat from a person in Massachusetts and have registered it in Rhode Island where I live. I know from research that the number on this plate is a "Home Made Boat" designation and it is also the number on the title. There are no other visible original hull ID numbers that I can locate. There is an aluminum plate on the engine well side of the stern which I believe is covering the original hull ID number. There is no way to remove it without removing the engine. Guessing that is the reason the new ID number was created.
My question is, does anyone know of some other area on the hull where I might find an original hull ID? I know it's a "real" Montauk but I'm curious as to any additional info that the original hull ID would provide.
I've looked everywhere I can think of with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

If there are no Stencil numbers or HIN numbers to confirm your belief on what year it is, please do not rely on your paperwork to inform you that it might be a 1977.
Titles do not care what year the boat is. Nor does any state. All they want is the tax due.
So, what other resource can you tell us why you think this is a 1977 year model?
Any photos?
See this article for more info.

And maybe post a photo.

Thanks Joe,
It is definitely a Smirk hull so I know it's at least a 1976. Just not sure about any other details to identify exactly when it was made etc. I have attached a photo that might help.

One more detail about the console that might help narrow down the year. The port side of the console has the louvered hatch door. The starboard side has nothing. I believe that later consoles had a fire extinguisher insert on this starboard side of the console.

Was the inside of the boat ever painted (over)??

No, the previous owner did paint the non-skid surface only with a polyurethane paint but the rest of the interior is all original.
