Bumping this as I have the same boat (Dauntless 14). Unfortunately flipped boat in Hampton Roads due to a bad tow rope (long story). Anyway after trying to baby the engine, instruments, etc. It's finally ready for a restore effort.
I'm looking for advice on what to put into this. I need a new motor, new controls, and new instruments. I'm considering the Yamaha F70, Suzuki DF70, etc.
I've read here and elsewhere weight is a big issue w/ these boats. The 50 merc 2stroke on it now has a dry weight of 255 (ish). I'm wondering how much weight this little boat can handle. The 50 was underpowered. It was fine for 2 people and not much else. But I'd really like to be able to have 4 adults, and light gear for spear fishing.
Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated,
rdh
PS. Where is the best place to shop for instruments, and controls as well.

Shop price and shop weight if you think it is important. I personally think people worry to much about weight, you can always shift stuff to compensate. I find e-bay and local marine surplus stores are the best for finding parts. Some things you may have to get from the dealer. When I did my last Suzuki install I had to get the wiring harness from them but everything else I got on e-bay, new, for much less.

Well I just pulled the trigger and having Outboard Exchange rebuild me a 90hp 2 stroke Yamaha. I'll update the thread when I get it on the boat and try it out! Wish me luck.

You'll need it! That is a lot of engine for that boat - - far over the max HP rating.

How did that 90 work out? I have the original 50 mercury. It’s a little slow of the line but has been bulletproof until a recent lack of chargeing issue.
