Can I use a 2005 tohatsu long shaft on a 13 whaler? Will it cause too much drag in the water? Would it be unsafe?

You need a jack plate. The Highjacker is perfect for that application.

I have a '69 13 and looked at a jack plate for use with a long shaft motor...mainly because very few make a 15' any more.
It might work fine but I do not like the idea...
1) kind of a gangly contraption and not apealing to the eye
2) places the motor about 6" farther aft and as you know the old 13s are rump heavy to begin with. With the motor farther aft ( especially a newer heavier 4-stroke) it cant improve the ride.
My vote is the 40HP 2-stroke 15" Tohatsu / Nissan. If you look at the spec's the 50 hp is the identical motor and will be my choice when I repower. Much lighter than a 4stroke.
If you must use a long, I would glass in the cutout with SS backing plates in and out. The taller transom helps the poop factor too!

I have seen some guys use an aluminum angle to lift the motor to the proper height on the transom. This doesn't set the motor as far back as a jack plate would.
