I have a 1988 Montauk 16 footer. I am in the process of replacing it’s trailer. My question is about bunkers. The trailer being replaced currently has two 9 foot bunkers right next to the keel rollers as well as two 6 foot outer bunkers. Most trailers I am seeing only have one set of bunkers. I just picked up another used trailer that has one set. Would one set of outer bunkers combined with 3 keel rollers be sufficient? I found an article here which shows the ideal Whaler trailer configuration and it shows two pairs but also says the long keel bunkers are “optional”. Thanks.

One set of 6' bunks with keel rollers will be fine.

Thanks a lot for the reply. If I may take it a step further, the outer bunkers on the current trailer have 12 inch bunker brackets toward the bow and 10 inch bunker brackets toward the stern. The trailer I am moving to has 8 inch brackets all around. I am wondering why there is a length difference on the old trailer. Perhaps simply to provide a tilt that will allow for drainage? It seems to me a couple extra cranks on the jackstand would do the same thing. Any insight? Thanks again.

I trailer 100% with a fair bit of mileage.

I have set my trailer so the gunnel of the boat (1987 Montauk, 1992 Outrage 17) is level when the frame is level. The ball mount on the truck is set so the boat/trailer is level (countering vehicle sag) when hooked up.

When parked, I just crank the jack a few turns to unhook. This height also lets any water drain.
