I am a Yamaha fan, but would buy whatever motor I thought would be most dependable long term. My only question is why the guy did not rig the boat with proper horsepower [2 motors of the same brand] and test tht way.
I can't imagine that being able to plane on one motor is the most important factor in choosing an outboard.
I would rank it at the lower end of my top 10.

I'm not sure about the inbiased part. He mentioned consulting with Evinrude repeatedly, but I didn'y hear any mention of consulting with Yamaha to optimize performance. It also wasn't clear to me where those engines came from -- the Yamaha seems to have been sourced from Evinrude. Was it brand new? Or did it have a few hundred hours on it? Did it need to be serviced? Could Evinrude have tampered with it?
But if I was going to pit a 150 HP 2-stroke against a 200 hp 4-stroke, it would be the Yamaha 200. That engine has a reputation for being especially weak. So much so that there is almost no difference in performance between a 175 HP and 200 HP Yamaha on the same hull.
No doubt that G2 ETEC 150 HO is a powerful engine. But the problem for those of us with classic Whalers is that the G2 ETEC engines are comparatively very heavy. So they wouldn't be my first choice as a repower option. In the 150 HP range, the modern 4-strokes are lighter and better suited to our old narrow hulls.

This is not a true apples to apples test.
It is well known that the torque curves of 2 and 4 strokes are very different.
Not surprising that a 150HO (~170 hp) 2 stroke engine will have the low end torque to get the pudgy hull on plane.
