After all the work done to my Montauk, last week I took the family out and broke down 200 yrds off shore. Tried the new kicker and it failed to start. Both engines are tied into the one fuel line. After some colorful language I rowed back to shore got the boat home and found the only thing I did not change was the primer bulb. Well guess what went? How the hell does a primer bulb go? Well I found out the hard way that they do go. Went out and bought a new one and the boat ran fine. I did notice a surge at top speed. I'm thinking I might need a carb rebuild. Any other ideas?

Harley,
You should have 2 primer bulbs.
One for your kicker and one for your main engine.... Unless you switch the fuel line from engine to engine....
I always keep a spare primer bulb in my tool box in my truck just for the reason you experienced.
You never know.....

For $149, I would get "Sea Tow", it's pretty cheap insurance.

I have the primer bulb right after the fuel tank. The fuel line then goes to separator where one line goes to main engine and the other to the kicker. i guess I should have a 2 bulbs after the sparator, one for each engine.

The dealer told me when i bought my yamaha outboard that the primer ball should be located between the engine and the fuel/water seperator.
With that said i dont have a kicker, but have 2 tanks that feed into a fuel selector valve. I too keep an extra primer ball on board as well as couple feet of extra fuel line and fittings in case i need to plug directly into in motor.

Harley,
Yes...... You should have two lines coming out of the fuel/water separator and each line should have a primer bulb on it...
The primer bulbs have a built-in valve that only allows fuel to go one way... Into the engine...
The way you have it setup, is that one engine will be trying to suck fuel from the fuel/water separator and the other engine fuel line.....
You an remove the primer bulb from the tank to the fuel/water separator and use it for one of the engines.

Interesting subject as to where the primer bulb is installed. On my current 150 HP Yamaha four stroke installation, the tech installed it between the fuel filter and the engine. On the three previous OMC installations, the techs installed them between the tank and the fuel filter. I guess it comes down to either "pushing fuel through the filter," or "pulling it through." I would think pushing it would be better than pulling it; at least that's been my experience. Electronic fuel injection does help!

well I plan on putting 2 additional bulbs on, 1 for each engine between the fuel filter and motor. This should end any problems........I hope.:o

My primer ball on my 18out has the ball leaving the tank then to the filter.
It
"seems" to take more pumps of the ball. But that could just be me.
