My Outrage is having its 22 birthday next month and I am going to repower with the max of 300 HP. I would love to go with the Merc but am leaning toward a Suzuki because it looks like the most bang for the buck. I was looking for some info on performance but can't find any posts on repowering this boat with a 300. Anyone have any ideas on what I can expect?

Crow repowered a classic Outrage 25 with a Suzuki 300. Very happy. Good performance and very good fuel economy.

With a light load, 125 gallons of fuel, 3 holes up 16x18.5 prop, 5900 WOT & 51.5 mph, 2.12 mpg.

A 300 OB is 60 HP over stated Max HP for that hull so like said B-4 you'll go really fast.
I could understand maybe a 250 but a 300 is overkill.

It has a 300 HP rating on the tag and I have seen some with twin 150's in the past. I searched the web and could not find anyone that had repowered with a single 300.
I raced boats back in the late 80's and like really fast but am now more interested in a quick cruise. OK! Maybe a little really fast now and then ;).
I am restoring the boat and will post my numbers after I get it back on the water.

We are discussing the VanLancker designed 1996 model rather than early Dougherty model produced from 1970-82.

Keep in mind this boat has a dry weight of 2500 lbs. Add the 11 people it can carry, 120 gallons of fuel and a few lbs of gear and you will want the hp.

The days of re-powering with twins is waning due to the engine cost, added harnesses, gauges and networking.

Not to mention the liability in today's society. Overpower and something happen, your insurance company will run faster then the boat.

I have a 300 Suzuki on a 25 Guardian and I can run 49 fully loaded with gear, batteries, t-top, and 150 gallons of fuel. It will not be slow on a 21 Outrage.

A Suzuki 300 should be a very good choice for the boat. I base that on the economies involved more than anything else. On the central Gulf Coast Suzuki is rapidly taking the guide repower business away from Yamaha because of prices.

Reliability should be more or less equal between the contenders. I don't know which 300 is the lightest but don't imagine that is a critical element in the decision on a relatively heavy boat.

I would look very closely at the Verado if a Mercury dealer can come anywhere close to the Suzuki cost. The supercharged engine provides amazing instantaneous torque when called upon. For a lot of information on the Verado engines try www.veradoclub.com and read the library offerings. It's a subscription site but lurking is free as is a lot of good information. I believe you can visit and make up to eight posts free of charge.

I had the same concern about the weight so I called Whaler and they said it was no problem for that transom. I don't remember the exact number but I think he said I would still be about 200 lbs under what it was designed for.
They were putting twin Merc 150's on that hull back in the 90's and I think they come in at about 400 lbs each. The Suzuki is just over 600 lbs.

Yes, Suzuki 300 with a 23 inch prop starting to test in the bottom hole and work my way down. Yes, I know I am starting too high and am sure I will have to come down one or two.
I took the boat completely apart and restored everything or replaced it and have a few more things to wrap up.
The plan is to fuel it up, load my normal gear then take it to the truck stop and weigh it. I have to do the break in then I will report my numbers on each hole with the 23 until I get the perfect height.
Next I want to get Ken at Prop Gods involved to see if any prop adjustment is needed.
I will record and report all my numbers till its just right.

I know this thread is old, but I was wondering how you like the 300 after using it for a while now? would you do anything different? have you changed anything since the original repower?

I ask because it's the exact setup I plan on going with in the near future.

Time marches on and a lot has changed in the engine market in the past year and a half. The Suzuki 300 used to compare very favorably against the competition. It still does, but anyone in the market for an engine in this HP class now has options that previously were not available. It would be hard not to look closely at the Merc 300 ProXS Fourstroke, which is a V8 with more displacement and weighing about 100 lbs less than the Suzuki in the 25" shaft.
