Joe,

I was looking at the list you compiled for the 22 outrage engine choices and was thinking, What about twin set ups? All of the listed motors are single appilcations. What about 90 - 130 hp or even 150hp twin engine set ups? Just a thought.

Jeff,

I had been thinking about the twin setup for Whalers below 25' but they just don't seem to fit these days due to the heavy weights of the new engines. Twin, heavy, 4 stokes are almost out of the question and that only leaves a few 2 stroke choices. Narrowing that down even further here in California, that leaves only the E-Tec and some of the 3 Star Optimax series.

It is also my opinion that Whalers below 25' should not have twins unless the vessel regularly goes far offshore.

Classic 22' Whalers are rated for max hp of 240... That basically means a pair of 115 hp on the transom. Check the weights out for a pair of 115 hp 4 strokes or 'clean' 2 strokes.

Classic 18' Whalers are rated for a max of 150... That means a pair of 70 to 75 hp on the transom.. Even fewer choices here that don't make the stern sit low in the water due to weight.

A single engine and a kicker seems to be the way to go for Whalers under 25'... You have more selections from the brands of engines today as the majority of the single engines won't exceed the weight the transom was designed for.
