The Montauk 190 comes standard with the 115 hp.....

Options include up to 135hp Max......
I think I would go for the max of 135hp....

While I am not a speed freak, I have read many threads about the Montauk 170 and 190 concerning horsepower.

The overwhelming consensus is that the first year are a bit underpowered. In following years, the standard horsepower increases. Given this, a 90 seems totally inadequate, despite it being the minimum horsepower listed by Boston Whaler.

I would ask the dealer to swap out the engine for at least a 115. If he balks, pass on it.

doesnt the higher HP help with overall fuel economy and rpm to plane?
I have heard the bigger motors will allow lower rpm for comparable speed with smaller motors. With fuel prices it may come in handy, not to mention increasing range.

just a thought

I just bought a 19 Montauk with a 115. I am a speed freak as I raced offshore boats for many years. I race cars and like fast bikes. That all said I am happy with the 115 on the Montauk 19. I have about 35 hr. on it the last 3 weeks. I usually ride with my girl friend only and very light gear. Boat runs 40 MPH I would guess. Jumps on plane decent and goes fast enough for me to have fun in the rough water. The motor to me burns very little fuel and near no oil.

I think the 90 would be two small for the boat. I could have waited for a 08 and got the 135 for about 7 grand more. I decide it was not worth it for me. I would bang up the boat more anyway as I like rough water. If I was a fisherman with gear and going to put 4 men on board a 135 would be the ticket. Skip the 90 the rigging I think is the same let him swap it for you. How much is the price difference?
