Just called the Yamaha dealer and was just schooled on the hook up of my kicker engine. Seems my main engine has a "push" style cable system while my kicker has a "pull" style. The really funny part which I find it hard to muster a smile about is the Yamaha 704 binnicle does not have a cam for the "pull" style only "push". The best part is I found this all out AFTER i bought the binnicle off of ebay.

As a side note, The dealer recommended a steering bar that mounts near the exhaust as opposed to a steering bar that bolts in front of the engine. I've seen a lot of people in here including Joe use the bar in front of the engine and they looked great. Starting to wonder if anything will go smoothly on this project. :(

Harley,

Keep your chin up.... _ _it happens......

I would call another dealer for an opinion. That seems odd that Yamaha changed horses in mid stream and one pushes and one pulls.... It that is the case, what is wrong with these people????

I had this problem with my 704 - Get the manual for it and you will see that it can be changed from push to pull or pull to push. You do not need a new control. Let me know if I can help you - I may have the manual laying around and could dig it up for you.

Thanks Joe and Sraab. I went to a different Yamaha dealer and he showed me the manual from a new 704. It seems both sides need to be set up push or pull and they are independent of each other. After looking at the control unit, it was determined that you CAN set up either side to a push or pull. As Joe stated above, GET A SECOND OPINION! The controls should be here next week. I'll give a full report when I hook everything up.

As a side note, I got the controls from ebay for $200, a far cry from the $640 quoted by my Yamaha dealer. :p

Thats where I got my controls from too. Ebay and craigslist have saved me quite a few bucks on my projects.
